Yeah, I hope it does not hurt its value to cover up the "original" paint. The paint is in good shape too. Maybe I should just button her back up and pretend like this whole thing never happened.

They're not worth anything used so I'd have at it. The first big gouge I put on mine and off to the painter it goes. I did scratch the heck out of the rear fender when installing my Corbin seat one day, in spite of Bluemarlin warning me about it, but I touched it up and it is under the seat anyway.
I thought you were being facetious about the side panels. Just remember when taking apart the gas tank, if it doesn't come easily apart just hit it with a ball peen hammer a bit.
The radiator shroud is off now. The first time I took it apart seemed much more difficult. I think it only took me 5 minutes this time. Anyway, I decided that I'm probably going to paint it, since I'm getting the bellypan which will also be painted. I think it will make everything flow well.
My wife says it's going to look like a goldwing by the time I'm done. I don't mind the gold wings, so that's fine, as long as it still drives like a rocket.
Perhaps I missed a previous post. What will the paint scheme be and what color are you going to paint the rad shrouds Did you painter say they'd be any trouble?

I was kidding about the difficulty of the side panels. There really are just the two bolts and they are off. I was also kidding about the paint, I hate the gray. The day I bought it, my wife and I began talking about how to paint it. I consider the gray to be just a really expensive primer.
Thanks for the advice regarding the hammer. I'll let you know if it turns out to be required. Starting on the gas tank as we speak. I think I'll do the gas float gauge tweak too while it's off.

There was a prior thread that I had posted some hacked up photoshopped pics of a rocket to get some ideas and feedback from folks. I'm a little worried about the shroud, but it seems that sand blasting the fake chrome off and then painting them does the trick.
Here is a picture of the paint scheme that I am going for. There is still somewhat of a dispute over whether to do the white wall tires or not. I'm undecided, but leaning toward black. I've gotten input both ways.
Marcus: We've only broached the subject. Have not even discussed details or what I want as of yet. I think he's in the middle of some top secret project with Evilbob
He sent me a note saying that he'd take care of me, so I think we've agreed "in principle" at this point. Once I get those midgets, I'll pester him some more.
