Sadly, this has continued to be a toxic subject matter that's predominantly laden with opinions, beliefs and emotion on the one side and science, law, facts and, after a point, no shortage of emotion, as well, on the other.
The pro-CT contingency, an extremely minute percentage of the entire motorcycling population over many decades, refuses to acknowledge certain facts that validate why the vast majority of motorcyclists choose to run on motorcycle tires. They scoff at the conventions and de facto standards of the motorcycle and tire manufacturing industries, not to mention the rigorous objectivity provided by the application of mathematics and physics to the issue, while at the same time being steadfastly dismissive of state and federal vehicle safety and operational regulations and guidelines - the very same regs and guidelines that insurance companies will default to if it's in their interest to do so.
Once more, I acknowledge that as things stand, it is still anyone's choice as to the type of tires they opt to use, just as it is our choice to either wear a helmet or not, or to choose to wear a helmet that affords little or no protection vs. lids that are proven to be the most protective of their user. Just because one is able to choose the least effective, least safe or less compliant option, that does not validate one's choice as a smart one. As long as you're permitted to have the luxury of making a choice, I'll defend your right to make it, even if it proves to be a dumb one. Frankly, I'm not certain that the perception by CT advocates that this is a legitimate matter of choice is defensible, because DOT regs and both manufacturers and insurance companies warranties, guidelines and policy scream out loud that that they are neither legal, nor defensible or so it seems to me. Sadly, levels of enforcement are virtually nonexistent unless someone is done harm and someone else intends another party or parties to accept the liability for such harm.
Therefore, when conversations arise in a forum such as this on any such subject, isn't it intelligent and pragmatic that all sides of the conversation are given their due? How else do we better serve our community than when all of us are willing to abide a comprehensive analysis and a respectful and intelligent conversation on these subjects?
