Triumph: 2014 Rocket III Touring
New here . . . posted in "Introduce Yourself" . . . hail from northern Virginia . . . prospective owner . . .

Just wondering about the cost of ownership.

Tires . . .service . . . brakes . . . saw a thread about a weak shift linkage . . .

How much might I do for myself . . . for what must I take to the dealer . . .

Looking at a 2014 Two Tone R3 Touring.

Will want to install heated grips, backrest for me, and a couple of powerlets for heated gear for those wonderful rides in cooler weather.

All the best to you.

Cheers,

Paul

Not sure how handy you are, but in my experience with trumpets, most things are easily serviceable by the owner. Brake pads are 60-70 for the front, 30-40 for the back. Tires look to be about the same as for a sport bike. Clutch issue can be avoided by doing 3 simple things: Adjust it properly, dont free-rev the engine with it in gear but clutch lever pulled in, and only pull in the clutch as far as you have to when shifting after you are moving.

In all honestly, owning a triumph is marginally more expensive than a UJM. Parts usually cost more, they ship from the Europe side, and the dealerships tend to be kind of meh about quality of work. The trade is a bike that doesnt look, ride or sound like anything else on the road :p

I vote get it, Rockets are terrific fun and so different than everything else in their classes. It's kind of fun having all the HD guys ooh and ahh over a triumph :)

And if you have a good dealership and service department with great mechanics...like I do...you don't worry about the "involved" maintenance at all. Some have said that the heated grips have some issues, I have them and haven't had any issues but just wanted to let you know that some have had problems and recommend alternative ways to heat the hands.

I have a 2014 Rocket III Touring and it is a great bike.

I just got my R3R and triumph was running a promotion on them. But the rocket and get $1000 in triumph apparel/accessories. I got my flyscreen, fixing kit, mirriors, and James Dean jacket for free basically. Ask about it!

Machinist,
Would you mind taking 5 minutes and maybe doing a post/review of the jacket? It has caught my eye as well, really curious about it in 60-80 degree weather. Basically as a winter jacket here in Oahu.

Anything you buy will have a cost attached to it, R3's are no more expensive than anything else. Preventative and regular maintenance/servicing is always the best option. When I first got mine I was reluctant to do anything to it but over time you get familiar and more confident with it. and as most will attest you end up spending more on extras and improvements than running costs.
As a mate of mine told me years ago, if you have to question the cost of owning it then maybe you should question the purchase of it.

Cost of ownership, UPDATED just looked at my spreadsheets
I am at $1700 at 10000 mile service, which includes a set of tires, 3 oil changes and filters, rear diff oil, kn air filters, ride on tire seal, and gas.
total cost fuel/maintenance = $1700
avg mpg = 34.15
avg gallons of fuel at fill up = 4.96
avg mileage per tank = 165
avg cost per fill up = $18.54
avg cost per mile including service = $0.18

Accessories as it sits today roughly $3000
