Wear gloves nasty stuff but won't hurt pain.

Not letting crud ' build-up ' is my answer, I only ever use a rag & WD.40; No tarnishing or scratch marks---EVER.

Single edge razor blade scraped my wifes boot heel off my pipes. Polished up with Mothers metal polish.

+1 for the fine steel wool to remove stuff.

First pic was just seconds after I applied it.
It cleaned up not too bad though and I have a bit more heat shield than in the second pic covering it now anyway.

YES I dont like the ceramic coatings and I wouldnt try oven cleaner on it anyway but I have had no problems with the chrome and stainless pipes
