Chasin a Gremlin.....

Well, the problem has been going on for a few months. Started with an occasional fart, stumble here and there, not every ride, just occasionally. And it got progressively worse. All along I figured it was the coil wires, as it was intermittent. When I pull the plugs, it'll show which cylinder is acting up. Also I never liked the way the throttle bodies went on. Gave me a little fit. I'm pretty sure there is no difference in the throttle bodies, 05 to 15 right? Besides she ran fine after the engine transplant, for months, no problems. I'll go through all the usual culprits when I can. Crank sensor, hoses, on and on, into the darkness! Ha!

I helped a bro out by having him get a thermo gun and use it on the pipes to tell which cylinder was not firing.
that will put u a little closer to solving prob.

i too have seen coils work good when cold and fail when hot.
So what you're saying is the coil has continuity when cold and loses continuity when hot, like electricity jumping a gap cold it can't bridge as the wires get hot. I'm dubious but I've seen weirder stuff so I'll defer to your experience. My expereince has been when the coil goes bad, the bike don't run, at all. But then I'm used to 4 cylinders and 2 coils, or 2 cylinders and 1 coil.

I got one. Teeter table thing, and temp gun. Although some spit on the finger works in a pinch! Ha! Also a squirt bottle with water can be helpful. As cwappy as it was running on one of the cylinders, the plugs will show for sure. I have a new set of iridium's to go in. "I know, I know" but I like them. My stock 2015 is ready to go, anytime I want to go for a ride. And actually looking forward to seeking out the Gremlin on my 05/15 convert. I did manage to air up the rear CT on the drag bike, and fired it up. Now has a Jardine header, nothing else! LOUD and FIERY! Just can't hardly get around at the moment. Can't get the drag bike out, without moving a bunch of cwap around. 2 Harley Sportsters, 1 Kawasaki ZRX1200r, and the 3 Rockets, and a spare engine sittin on the floor. Yes, I'm too old for dis chit! But gonna have fun, even if I have to crawl around on my hands and knees! Don't get me wrong, I'm VERY BLESSED, "but"
Old age SU_KS! ;)

this happen when i was about 20 back when i knew everything.
woman came into the service station and said a mechanic said she needed a coil (early 60's ford)
so i pulled the coil wire had her turn over the motor nice blue spark jumping about an inch so i told her that mechanic don't know what he is talking about. got into the ford and drove about 3 blocks car stopped checked spark orange spark about 1/4 in. never done any testing but had walk back to shop to eat my words

when u find the cylinder i would do compression test on the bike.

Used to have a heck of a time with coils on my old outboards, as a kid. Get going like hell, coil heats up, and you're paddling until it cools off. In the old days, they used to get mushy. Humm wonder what happened to the old Model T spark box I had laying around ??? Ha!

OK, back at it. Pulled the throttle bodies, re-seated, checked all vacuum hoses etc. Still missing bad. Heat gun shows number 1 cylinder is the problem. Changed coils, no difference, still not running number 1. Will pull plugs after I cool off some, but I don't see how both plugs could be fouled, so seriously afraid. Might try a compression test on number one, if I can get my gauge hose down the hole. "Later" o_O o_O:eek:

Well, I F'n quit! Changed number one coil, checked spark at plug, good. 6 new plugs, still no good, missing on number one at below 1000rpm, catches and fires when you give it some throttle. Changed throttle bodies and injectors. Same o chit. Compression on number one was 175lbs. nuttin wrong with that. Pulled crank position sensor. Clean as a whistle. I give up! Thoroughly disgusted, hot, tired, sore and pissed. So sick of all the sensors, wires, hoses, on and on. ****ed thing like the space shuttle. Oh for 3 carbs and a magneto............
