Change my own oil and filter at 500 miles...?

How do you do that?

I use an oil extractor that's hooked up to my air compressor. Never been easier. I pulled the plugs just to see how much was left. There was about half a quart. The next change I won't worry about the residual.

What I want to know is how do you 'extract' the oil from a dry sump engine? You can extract the oil from the oil tank but there will be a bit of oil in the sump and there maybe more as the bike ages, depending on the integrity of the check valve at the end of the suction line in the sump. R3's are noted for leaking check valves which is why it's imperative to check the oil after running the engine for a minute or so, so the oil is pumped into the tank. There is no easy access to the sump other than the multiple drain plugs. The oil level must be checked with the motorcycle upright, not leaning on the side stand which will give a false reading.

That 'quart' or so in the sump needs to be drained and the plugs pulled to allow any particles to come out the drains...by gravity. Something that won't happen by using any extractor.

That quart in the bottom has had it's additive package depleted and is laden with by-products of combustion as well. Leaving the oil in the bottom dilutes and compromises the fresh oil. I'd just pull the drains (a very easy task) and be done with it.

That applies to your cage as well. No extractor will get all the worn out and compromised lube oil from any sump. Vacuum extractors are made for ladies without men to change their oil......:D

let the dealer do the first oil change and then i do the rest myself
