A couple of days ago I was backing out o my garage when the bike stalled. I restarted it but the engine light was on. It stayed on as I rode downtown to do some business. When I got downtown I started hearing a rattle as I revved up the engine. This noise was like the paint can rattle on steroids. I had never heard it before and figured the chain had become really loose and was about to give up the ghost.

After I got done with the business, I started the bike up and could still hear the rattle. I was hoping I could make it home before it bombed. Well, a couple of minutes later the engine light went off and the rattle slowly disappeared.

I have had the paint can rattle off and on for eight years, but this noise was different. It was very loud and occurred at all rpm's, even at idle. I have no idea what happened or how it fixed itself but the noise is gone and the bike still runs great.

??????????????

I'm afraid I can't help with the problem but it would seem that whatever it is probably has only gone away temporarily. The fact it seems to have fixed itself - my absolute favourite solution to mechanical problems (and I think yours too ;)) - suggests that it might not be immediately terminal, but I'd be wary. Good luck with it anyway. Sorry I'm no help.

I'd drop the sump and check there is nothing there that should not be there like a bolt or something broken off something, a small hassle now would be better than a total rebuild later:eek:

Yeah, could be, it did sound like something loosened and then came off. But if I find a bolt or broken piece in the sump, then what? And if I don't that doesn't mean the bolt or piece of metal isn't stuck somewhere. I'll just keep riding and if it blows I will just part it out and get a new bike or have Carpenter racing fix it.

Better still take it to Carpenter and ask them to do the 240 kit, ask them to keep an eye out for a foreign object if you wait it could mean a much bigger job = bigger $ specialy if something lets go and puts a new inspection window in the side of the crank case

96,300 miles you need a new timing chain. I bet your tensioner slipped and retracted causing slop and the rattle you are lucking then it went back out. I bet your tensiomer is at full exstension. If your not going to change it part the bike out now you'll get more money then go buy another. Or send it to Carpenter Racing and get back a fresh Gorilla.

Thats a lot of miles you should be pround of the bike.
