The spongy feeling at the lever is air in the system. Here's another trick I've used. Take a squirt bottle spritzer and rubber band the trigger back. Then attach a bleeder hose to the caliper nipple and the other end to the spritzer tube. The spritzer is a one-way valve and will allow fluid out but prevent air in. Then slowly bleed the brakes until only fluid is seen in the spritzer line. The lever should have more resistance as the air purges. Snug the bleeder and do the same for the other side. Your brakes should be a lot better afterward.
