You guys do realize this is the Touring forum, right??
Tire performance and mileage is quite different on the Touring as compared to the other models. The 240 Metz seems to get fewer miles than the 240 Avon, while the 180 on the Touring model is just the opposite.
Not taking the model into consideration is this conversation will likely end up giving the original poster some erroneous information.

Yeah, if you come in the same way I do, from the 'Home' page its not obvious which forum you're in. For the most part it makes little difference, but in this case for some reason the tires from Avon and Metzler really differ in their performance between the models.

I suspect there are posts on the subject, but I'm too lazy to go hunting for them.
Speaking from my experience with one set of Avons and two sets of Metzlers the Avons handled better. I got right around 8,000 miles out of the Avons. The first set of Metzlers lasted a bit over 10,000 miles and the second are still going. I've heard the same results from others. I was going to get a second set of Avons when I got this set but got a much better price on the Metz and would have had to wait a bit too long for the Avons. I'll probably go back to Avon or try the new Bridgestones when this set is done.
From everything I've read about those that have used both brands on a 240 tire, the opposite is true. The Metzler seem to stick a bit better but the Avons last longer. Could one of the manufacturers use a different compound in one of the tires? Maybe.
Front tyres too Harry? Aren't they the same size? Or does the fetter rear mean the front has different forces to deal with?
And Densell, with apologies again to the OP, I'm not sure I could say which was the better front between Avon and BS. I like to have the set so am happy to have BS front and rear, but the Avon was great. The BS does seem to pump water out sideways like no other tyre I've used on any bike. Avon was sure and stead in wet and dry. The BS is an Exedra (no Max) and is a G701 if memory serves. Well worth a try as it's certainly at least as good as Avon IMO.
The R3T front is a 150 80/16. My rears wear out before the fronts, but not by enough to only change the one. I really don't know what accounts for the difference in performance, I just know the Avon feels stickier when leaned over.
I read a short review of the BMW S1000RR recently where the author reported getting 1500 miles out of a rear tire. I'm going to stop complaining about the difference between 8 and 10,000.
