Overinflating will in fact hurt its performance, it's only meant to be a thin layer between you and the seat to distribute your weight over your entire butt; it primarily works by relieving hotspots that form under the tailbone, for instance. The Airhawk-R is the model that has cutouts that leaves the scrotum and that area without direct pressure.
However, I'm not aware of this really being aimed to improve the back. Just to deal with butt pain for longer rides. I suppose it might help if it slightly alters your posture or something.
I have had a non-R model for a few years (the large cruiser model) but don't bother using it on the Rocket much.
