5,700 miles and I need a new rear tire

Guys:
Forgive me if I'm a bit direct here, but as the OP, I DID NOT ASK for any opinions about car tires. I started this thread simply to show what the remaining tread looked like on the OEM tire after only 5700 miles. I'm going DS with my next tire, and if you want to debate that, start your own dang thread, and get the he11 outta mine. I'm quite sure I don't want to hear it, and i'll bet nobody else does either!!!!!!!

I would welcome a discussion of the Pros and Cons of car tires with some one that has experience using one one their motorcycle. You're no more qualified on that subject than I am on the use of feminine hygiene products. I've seen the commercials and I've been riding vaginas for over 30 years but ........


CW I agree with you 100% but unfortunately when you start a thread it's like kicking a baby bird out of the nest . All you can hope for is that it has a good life and stays vaguely on topic.
 
Sorry Buddy but the Stubborn Dutch in me won't let someone who does not actually use a D/S try a comment on purely heresay generated by Nahsayers, I hope you will enjoy your experience on the Darkside and just remember to keep the psi down at first and find the pressure that works for you before you start pushing it patience with the getting used to it period will reward you!!! again sorry to let it stray

Cobra, what size tire did you get for your R3T?
 
Cobra are U riding a Touring with the skinny tyre or STD/Classic/Roadster all of which run the 240/5016 rear your picture looked like a 240/50/16
 
I have an R3T...went with a General Altimax HP, 205-60-16. Local shop mounted it for me today - no charge. I tipped the tech, then bought 3 oz. of Dyna beads. Got home, re-broke the bead (REAL easy), poured in the Dyna beads. Then aired it up, installed it, and went for a ride. I love it!! If I did not already know it was a "car" tire, there's no way I would have guessed. Absolutely ZERO noticable differences vs. "bike" tire. except of course, the new tire actually has some tread on it. LOL! Rear braking is much improved. After I wear off the mold release, I'll really put it thru it's paces.

Here's the recap: $90 instead of $250; superior braking and acceleration traction; no noticable handling differences; 30,000 mile tread life vs. 5,000 miles.

I love it.

That's awesome, you even kinda went against the grain and got one with a solid center rib. I was going to comment on my experience with Metzler wear in that it looked fine right up until the cord showed (since it didn't have any tread anyway), but you seem to have made the leap without any side effects.
I know alot of guys here love the look of going as wide as possible, but it seemed to me that staying under the actual width of the stock tire exhibits almost no noticeable difference in handling but everything in performance.
You described it very well, I'm happy it worked out for you too.

Have any of you ever ridden one of those custom choppers with a 300 on the rear?? They handle like sh!t, I don't see how the guys on ridged frames can get around a corner. And those are bike tires.

I've said before that flat tread felt terrible to me on other bikes, but not on the R3. It is different isn't it? Something about this bike just screams for a car tire.

Tire rubbing?

Cobra, Are you getting any rubbing of the tire on the inside of the fender?
Also if you could tell me the measurement between the back of your tire and the round black bar that runs across the back that would be appreciated.
I have a trailer hitch so that measurement is important for me.
On a stock R3T with stock Metz tires that measurement is 2 3/8 inches.
