3 fold problem - HELP

Sounds like an ignition switch on the way out to me. Mine acted similarly. Got it to the dealer before it totally quit. They said they cleaned the switch contacts and all is good now.

I had the same issue with TuneECU the other day. Then I realized I had the run switch turned off. Worked like a champ afterwards. I am very careful with the throttle now.

i got mine up and running the pack rat had chewed several wires. sorry to hear your still having trouble. my opinion is that you should work on the starting problem first as the other prob. might be fixed when you solve the starting prob. you don't have to have a triumph scanner. i used my regular car scanner on mine. as long as it is an obdII scanner it should work. each scanner gives diff. info depending on the way they are set up.
with your starting prob. i doubt if a scanner will help you much. i don't have a wiring dia for your bike but i doubt if it has an instrument fuse. its probably the fuse that works the lights&engine management relay which puts power to the instruments. he doesn't have to have a scanner to fix your elect prob. but he needs to have a good knowledge on how the relays work and how to use a multimeter. also a triumph manual which you can get online.
ign switch is probably the problem you can check that with the multi meter. installing the east beaver will help you out with your lights but you might still have problem with start going through ign switch. hopefully the guy knows what he is doing also if he is not to proud some of us should be able to give him some info.

when you are checking a no start condition you can take a jumper wire place it on the battery positive terminal attach a 20 amp inline fuse to it then place it on top of the headlight fuse. if your gauges light up and make the sweep then your problem is probably the ign. switch. if it doesn't do anything your problem is probably low battery or problems with connections.
the clutch switch,kickstand switch and the starter button all send a signal to the computer. so when all three are sending the right signal the computer then computer grounds the starter relay. if you have the starter relay in your fingers and you try to start the engine if you (FEEL) the relay energize that means the clutch switch,kickstand switch and the starter button are working ok. if you don't feel the click you can remove the relay and check with multimeter to see if you have computer ground or power from ign. switch or power to energize relay. you can jumper(with 20amp fuse) to starter and engine should crank over (BE CAREFUL IF IT IS NOT IN NEUTRAL THE BIKE WILL TAKE OF) IF THE KEY IS ON IT MIGHT START.

while working and talking about these electric problems something dawned on me. if the current draw with the lights was taking out the ign. switches the bikes would stop running while going down the road.
also the newer roadsters has the relay for the lights and they still have trouble. it seems as though the ign. switch always fail when you try to start the rocket. which makes me believe the current draw of the starter solenoid is reason that the ign. switch fails. some of the guys have been talking about an extra starter relay i never paid much attention to them but now they have my full attention!
there may be a wiring dia. of an extra relay or someone needs to put one on the site. they could call it the western beaver (this western beaver is pretty good to) .
hanso is good on relays very good i like his relays.

First off, I would like to thank you Herman for the thought and time you took to put in this information. I have found the folks on both sites to be very helpful and informative and all around good folks to partner up with.

I am hoping that you are on to something there in your last post. The shop never did find anything as a root cause on my bike. However, I had them do the Eastern Beaver and the Starter Relay mods. Since I picked it up a week ago, I have not had any issues (knock on wood!) and I have been riding the daylights out of it. Fingers are crossed that the extra relay did the trick!

Good post! it gathered a lot of good stuff, My eastern beaver relay with switch came in the mail a bit over a week after I ordered it It' been sitting in my garage the last month. I don't want to mess anything up doing it myself but I dont really want to pay $95.hr to the shop when their triumph guru has never heard of eastern beaver!

..do it yourself..it's not too hard..take your time and familiarize yourself with everything as you go along..here's the link for the kit..

I just wanted to do a little update here. It has been about 3-4 weeks since I had these mods done and my bike is still starting! Yay starter relay mod!

I did find while on my trip that my clutch slips a little, especially if I try to get on it in a gear higher than where it "should be", but the bike runs great otherwise. I'll probably have that checked out over the winter.

Anyway, I just thought I would update the thread for anyone who may face a similar issue.

It sounds like it's sorted. The clutch should have 2-3mm of free play at the clutch lever. This is a critical adjustment. If you don't have it then your clutch may slip. If you have too much then you will break the clutch lifting mechanism in the bike. In other words, make sure it is correct.

Have you sorted out the secondary TPS setting yet?

just thinking that if the starter relay fixed the prob. then the ign. switch must have been bad. you no longer have the large draw of the starter but you still have the injectors,coils and other stuff coming through the ign. if it was me i would replace the ign. switch to be on the safe side. if you don't watch out for elect. prob.
i think that the ign. switch has been stressed and needs to be replaced.
