Does anyone know if a failed water pump has caused coolant to go into the cylinders or crankcase on a 2300?That is certainly food for thought. Come to think of it I didn't check for bubbles in the radiator. I think an exhaust gas test might still be in order as well
The most common cause of coolant entering the oil system on a Triumph Rocket III (Gen1) is a failed water pump mechanical seal, which allows coolant to bypass the pump’s internal barrier and migrate into the crankcase. This is the primary failure point when coolant and oil mix. A bad head gasket would allow water into the combustion chamber when chamber pressure is near negative and that can be checked by pulling spark plugs and checking the tips.
Yep. . . That was what I was thinking as well. I'm being as cautious as I can to run the engine as little as possible. I will warn you new water pumps are nonexistent at least in the US. There have been a couple folk on the Facebook waiting on an alleged backordered water pump some waiting since last year. The last I read a dealer said they arrive in October but Im not buying it. Those production lines are long gone. There may be some overseas but a used one seems to be the best option if one can be located or having one rebuilt which has been resorted too also. FYI I'm in Kansas City near Gladstone.
Well I'm off and headed home. Will give an update to Y'all when I get the tank off to look at the plugs and maybe run a coolant pressure test with the oil drained and the drain plugs out.
Yep, my assumption is what Triumph actually means is we don't sell a bearing and seal kit and recommend replacing the pump. We which is all fine and well if you actually have the pump to sell (and aren't gouging the price too much). But any bearing shop will be able to find a seal and bearings to fit, unless there is something magical about the pump.
The new Rockets are a blast. I have a 2011 Touring, so can compare. It's unreal the power of the new ones. Plus they're about 200 pounds lighter. Feels very maneuverable and unbelievably fast. As @Kevin frazier would say, smiles per mile are off the charts.
