'05 headed to 1st service check, need advice pls

Ok erratic idle can come from a few things one be there was a recall and reflash of the map by triumph to address this could take up to one minute to do this. Yes there was a batch of buggered TPS units which usually results in the idle hopping up to say 2000 rpms and when you shut the bike off it returns to normal for a wee bit. So it depends on your definition of erratic idle. There are some Rockets out there with the original TPS Scot in exile has a 05 with 70,000 miles on it and the original TPS. It could be you just need a full ISCV reset which might take 5 minutes if their slow. I would hope they would check the throttle body balance while its there. If you have to original air box system this would take a wee bit longer to adjust them if they need tweaking in. If it has some type of triple filters or Ram air then well its just a few minutes to adjust/tweak them in.

I had thought it had something about a knock on decel which I would wonder if it was decel pop out the exhaust or a knock But I see nothing above about it. So as to not freak you out I will not talk about the UPDATE kit at this time as there are plenty out there that have not had nor needed it.
Hope this helps I will check back in after I get back from the store to see if anything has changed as to the knock stuff !!!!!!!!!

while I do have deceleration popping, I also have a knock while decelerating in gear. the knock is not felt but heard. i'm figuring the decel popping could be related to tune issues, original plugs, etc. the bike has original air intake configuration, no mods have been executed on this bike performance-wise.
I have read several threads about the update kit but did not see mention of the decel knock symptom i'm hearing. perhaps I missed it. regardless I am concerned about this noise. as a reminder, the bike is going to the triumph dealer this Saturday for a "post-purchase inspection". at that time they will help me determine the overall condition of the bike and what needs to be done to insure long term enjoyment.
if there's a silver lining here, 12 yrs of manufacture and history should offer much on how to address most of the early year bugs.

Ok if I were to guess at what it is I am afraid it would chase you away from the purchase so I think it would be better to let the Triumph guys inspect it first and see if they can determine the noise. I would like to ask if the decel knock is in every gear though?

I am worried about worrying you or not it feels like ?

first off, the bike is mine, no purchase decision to be made here. don't worry about scaring me, i'm a big boy, been thru lots of race engines (car) over the years. not sure about knock in every gear but will pay more attention today while riding.
my hearing is not good so i may be mis-interpreting the sound (did i mention i've been around lots o' race engines?).
some good news.....the erratic idle has not presented itself yesterday or today. there is still a lack of smoothness at low rpms, minor missing or such.
want to get a look at the plugs and also check the coil/plug wires as you or someone has mentioned in other posts.

OK so it is yours and I do not have to worry steering you wrong now were in like flin. So when you go to the dealer mention the recall idle tune down load for the early bikes have them run a ISCV reset and that way they You know the primary TPS setting and stepper motor setting is correct.

Now I typed this earlier but keep in mind I did not know you owned the bike.

I can not help but give you my opinion on the knock. I think its the torsional damper hammering because the bearings are going away. I could be wrong but I would hate myself if I was right and you bought it. The only real quick way to check would be to drop the oil sump and look in the rear pick up screen area for bearing bits (balls and pieces of the cage). At the dealer it might be pricey except for the 12.00 dollar gasket as you would have to drain the oil. Maybe a way to check would be to drop the filter and cut it open for inspection if you spin a new one on your only out the filter and if quickly done less then a quart of oil. (depending on when the last oil change happened) Do you have a manual? if not I or one of us could point you to one of IDK (ian's) post so you could down load it right to your lap top!!!! This is a valuable tool.

Also some of the early rockets got a bad batch of lower crank gears on the timing chain which were soft and the keyway wollered out. Some called it the coffee can rattle you might be able to see it thru the inpsection port on the front cover. Also Which I would check first as it is the easiest to do would the tensioner drop test as ts either out far enough that you hearing chain slop if you have a set of dial calipers I could walk you thru checking it. it will take you five minutes and depending on how far it dropped I could walk you thru making the high dollar spacer they sell out of a 10 mm bolt shank with a hack saw easy job.
I will let you absorb this case you have a question or three

Of course after you down load the manual so we can talk from the same pages. And if you got a shop manual with the bike
look at this thread post number three in Ian's signature for the shop manual down load

Need R3T service manual.

I have downloaded the service manual, thanks.
I do have a noise I thought was gravel in the tranny. it's likely the issue you're describing.
I cannot find an inspection port on the front cover and a search in the manual describes one but none was found.

Page 3.6 in the manual. you might be able to ell if the exhaust side of the cam chain is sloppy its not a big port. I would not worry about it until we check the cam chain tensioner. And if you start without me do not start or even turn over the engine while the center nut is out of the tensioner. I beet and done for the night bud we will check that tomorrow just let me know when your off work and I get on the site and we will knock it out. But you will need a dial caliper metric does not matter we can convert to English. It doesn't matter whether its a dial, digital, or Vernier caliper as long as you know how to read it. heck it can be done with a depth micrometer although the only people who usually have that is a tool maker or machinist.
