Whats happening?

Out on a 4 day ride. Day 2 finds me having tranny problems. Sometimes I have 2nd gear but mostly not. Then when down shifting from 5th to 4th. I loose 4th and gotta try 3rd. I'm finding the gears. Sometime they stay in gear and then disappear. Any help would help. So far I'm still traveling
 
Sounds like classic detent spring. If it's broken, there is nothing to keep the shift drum in the selected gear. What year / model ?
 
Sounds like the Detent Spring to me. I rode home to Maryland from California last time mine went, so it is possible. However, it is possible, but unlikely, that it could get stuck in a gear.

When you have to move through the gears, keep pressure on the shifter till you change to the next gear. Using the heel shifter going up makes this easier. It should stay in 5th without a problem.

The Detent spring went out on my 08 touring at 22000 miles, I see a pattern here!
