Owner of Goliath, the giant motorcycle
Plenty of close calls over 3+ decades of riding but first time putting a bike and me on the ground.
2 lane highway, doing about 45-50, lifted jeep in front of me slams on his brakes 'cause the guy in front of him did the same, smacked into the lower portion of rear bumper and hit the ground.
went over right with my leg under the bike, slid a ways, bike finally lets me go and slides ahead (like it's a race!). once I stopped sliding my first thought was to get off the highway before I got run over.
luckily cars had stopped, plenty of folks come to help. I get to my feet (right ankle is singing a tune), head over to my bike wanting to get it upright and off the road. folks help me pick it up and we wheel it to an open shoulder area.
first off, "ALL THE GEAR, ALL THE TIME" saved my ass. if I hadn't been wearing a full face helmet, armored mesh jacket, armored jeans (hips and knees) with Kevlar, heavy boots and gloves i'd be typing this from a hospital bed instead of my home office.
the worst part of the event was having to call my wife and tell her what happened. hated making that call, scaring the crap out of her. she's not a fan of me riding but has put up with it over the years.
did I mention my conceal carry automatic came out of it's holster and slid down the highway? a cop found it (thank god) and returned it to me, no problem (I have my permit).
I've got some road rash on my right forearm where my sleeve rode up, very sore shoulders, and a sprained ankle. still went to work today. feel like I got hit by a bus but it was only asphalt.
insurance gal telling me it's likely my bike will be totaled as it's over 10yrs old (it's an '05). i'm SICK, I just got the bike a couple months ago!! i'm afraid the settlement won't get me into another rocket.
i'm **** lucky to be okay but sick about the bike and potential of losing it.
sounds like myself and others have had some bad luck with bikes lately.
you all be careful out there!
