Transmission Advice Please - 2009 R3

Are you 100% certain of the diagnosis? A broken detente spring can give similar symptoms and it's status or repair can be confirmed or performed via removing the cover on the front of the motor.

A tech at one of my local and super-lousy Triumph dealerships diagnosed my bike with the same dislodged internal nut failure and said the engine had to be dropped out and cracked open in order to repair it. Fortunately, I was well counseled and insisted that they inspect through the front cover to see if the detent spring was broken.

Who do you think was right? (Hint: it wasn't Clueless, Luckless and Guesser in the back of their shop)

I broke that bolt off in my bike. Took 3 months to get him fixed and $4,820.00
They put everything in though, all new gears, shifting forks, the update kit, new stator, out put bearings,
and for some reason the output housing.
It has never shifted so nice, drops right into 1rst, always had to load it a bit before, and now the 1-2 shift is straight in
no having to drag it though neutral. I'm real pleased with the results but the parts supply and cost are terrible.
When this bike wears out or breaks again it will be back to another bike from the big 3.

... and isn''t it insulting, IMO, that Triumph sticks the repair bill - for something that's almost always attributable to an assembly line brainfart - to their customers?

Unfortunately my dads shop is about a 6 hour drive away in my hometown. So driving the bike there stuck in 2nd gear wasn't an option. If I had a truck and the time to drive it back that may be an option but I may just have to bite the bullet on this one.

Thank you all for your input. I think I have my answer .... it is within the realm of what it would actually take.

I don't think it sounds like a detent spring. Mine went and it just wouldn't hold any gears other then 1st and 5th. The shifter wouldn't rotate around any more than normal.
That said, a new spring is only a couple of bucks and might be worth replacing as a preventative measure if they're in there anyways.
