TORS

While the CAT is in the mufflors on the R3T and removed witht eh TORS there is still a large collector box under bike. I'm sure removing it and replacing with free flowing pipe would improve sound (and performance).

I really wonder if that is true. Since that collector box is hollow, what purpose did the designers of the exhaust system have in mind when they put it there? It does nothing to baffle the sound. Could it have something to do with balancing the exhaust and creating the optimum amount of back pressure? It seems to me that it would have been cheaper to just connect the pipes with simple tubing rather than insert the collector box.

While it doesn't muffle the sound, it does affect it. Since the exhaust pulses go from the head pipe into large open chamber than into the mufflers there is energy lost in process and the sound changes.

Some of the newer muffler designs for cars have no absorbant matterial but are just specially designed resonators, which is what the collector box is.

I have no idea what TORS is, but I can tell you my newly purchased left over '08 R3T is so dam quiet I can't hear winding up it so as to know when to shift. It also has a seperate "cat" box set up I am sure to kill the emissions. A change out is definitely in the planning for this Hinkley factory exhaust system. I am used to BUB 7's on my HD and this Rocket sure can't be quieter!

4wd - your R3T does not have a seperate CAT box, the CATs are in the front of the mufflers. What you are calling the CAT is the collector/resonator GPM and I are discussing.

Right now I am only aware of 3 options for the R3T, TOR's (Triumph Off Road), D&D and Raask. All 3 are slip on mufflers only that remove CATs.

There are other options - any slip on muffler will do as long as it fits, but it must then be realized that a way to hold the slip-on to the undercarriage bar (under the hard bags) needs to be addressed.

I have been trying to get TravelGuy to attampt to biuld a set of preds that would address our design change. problem is I don't live in CA and he would need the bike for a while. I have also been to a couple of custom car exhaust guys I know and we are also looking at that option.

As a note it seems the new roadster, may or may not have a new exhaust design. From the pictures I have seen it looks to be a one and one design. this might help us - who knows - but I am trying to figure out how then new ABS parts might be fitted to my R3t 2008.

OK, thank you Ransom. Maybe I'd best leave the exhaust alone since others are also wanting something different. Maybe someone will come up with something that won't be offensive, but will be authoritive when the wick is twisted. BTW, I really like the factory large chrome dual exhaust pipe look. Just the sound is non existant.

So, do you think that the sole, or at least primary function of that box is to further dampen the sound? I do know that my R3T with the D&Ds is by no means loud. I can't imagine that it would take much to design a Y type pipe to replace the small box. I would like to get a look at the Jardine system for the R3T and see how they handled that area.

I've dyno'd at around 130/150 and would be interested to see what effect eliminating that box would have.

ermmm I'm a relative newbie to the Rocket but I think Motorcycle News reported that the cats were moved into the mufflers because they needed the space underneath for the ABS unit. Perhaps what you are looking at is not a collector box at all ?

Mike,

By a collector box we're talking about that small hollow box that the header pipe enters, and in turn has two pipe leading to the mufflers. On the parts fiche (check Bike Bandit) the complete piece is called Exhaust Link Pipe Assy. The part in question is on the leftmost end of that piece.

Drill the baffles on the R3T TORS

Does anyone have experience drilling holes in the R3T TORS? Any advice to offer? Will I have to change my TuneBoy settings?
