To do, or not to do? That is the question.

Got a 2011 roadster in the spring and will need a tire by spring 2012. Got a few mods like trip k&n's, jardine exhaust and pc5 with auto tune. I'v never ridden with a car tire though. Kind of scared to try it. I came from the sport bike world and love to turn hard and fast. Not sure if the car tire can handle it. My theory is double the posted corner speed and that's about right for unknown corners. Most people I ride with can't keep up in corners.

With this known does anyone dare ride like this with a car tire? If so what tire would be best?

dude, I havent tried the darkside and personally having studied the composition of rubber and fabrication technology and techniques, Ive decided to stick with the costly Metzler option. I under stand from those that have converted most are happy but I dont know how they ride and on what roads they ride.

Now as an aside, Where did you get your highway pegs from? Looking for something like this without having to install the crash bars.

This is about where Hellfire would chirp up , telling you how great car tyres are and how f#cked Metzlers are . Guess im still getting my head round i won't be reading his comments anymore :( ... Betcha f#ckin Metzler are pleased though ...... Sorry didn't mean to hi-jack your thread.

Good on ya Tomcat...bless Hellfire.

Why did he love car tyres so much?

He loved ds tires because they are as effective in all driving conditions and superior in most conditions. I only say superior in most because someone may find a driving condition that they perform only as well as a mt. The deciding factor that pushed me to initially try ds was when I compiled a pro/con list I noticed that all (99%) of the con list contributors were non-ds tire users. I am familiar only with the performance characteristics of the ds and mt and not so much on the chemical makeup of the rubber etc... If you buy and install a ds tire and are dissatisfied, I will personally purchase the ds from you at 80% of what you paid for the ds, if you are willing to send it to me and the ds has less than 1500 miles on it. Now my coin is where is my mouth is, enough said.

I was reluctant at first also. There is a slight difference in handling, more counter steer, but after a 50 miles I didn't notice it any more. Now I can't tell the difference.
I have 18k on my Rinken Raptor and yesterday I hit the twisties HARD I actually scraped the exhaust heatshield and the frame ( the part that holds the footpegs)
it couldn't possibly go any further over and the DS tire never slipped. This was about 60 mph on 20 mph curves.
Will post pics later.
Hope this is the info you wanted.

Hellfire held off trying the Darkside asking all the usal questions till Nolton found the BF Goodrich which had nicly rounded edges and reported a good feel to it, like most of us because like you he and others myself included came from sports bike riding style backgrounds, I was fortunate enought to meet a darksider not long after buying my then new rocket and having already gone of the edge of the tread and marked the sidewall of the Metz with a couple of nasty slides up in the hills near home, anyway this guy said I should try a DS and I laughted at him and said I like to get serious in the corners, so we went for a ride and he stuck with me which is generally a bit unusual so I followed him the next time out and was amazed at how much of the tyre stayed in contact as the speed increases, if you follow a DS at low speed it appears to lift up on to it's edge, this an illusion or the rider is tuning to much air. Forget it a darkside needs to be run softer. I am now using a federal 595 which has a wear rating of only 260 ( the lower the rating the better the grip) this tyre I run at a max of 30psi it does not go on to the sidewall at all no matter how hard I'm scraping the pegs.
Now in contrast the first DS I used was a Toyo which at even 33psi was going over on to the sidewall even though it was not loosing grip, in both cases the Toyo and the federal have both been 245's so yeah I like em wide and I weight 110kg a tad over 6 foot tall and have no trouble get the rocket changing direction quickly.
The BF Goodrich is unfortunately not available over here otherwise I would have tried it or the R/ Raptor (also not available here) but the federal has also got Nicely rounded edges and hangs on great even in the wet I was passing sports bikes thru the bends on the way to Phillip Island last week

Yeah that happen once when I was going thru a tight corner and there was small dip... The sound of that peg rail scraping caught my attention then later I found the bottom of the heat shield had a bit ground off as well... Kinda felt good would never have been game to take the Metz that far over.... Would've ended up on me arse! for shore

Lets see.
I ride in pretty much all road conditions.
From gravel road to super slab.
Rode my Riken Raptor up and down the "Tail of the Dragon"
a couple of times.
I think it'd be ok to try it
coming from a sport bike perspective..
keeping in mind,
the Rocket AIN'T no sport bike,
but still riding as fast around the curves as you feel comfortable,
yea, I think it'd be ok.
