Does it spit on the ground any when it's just filling the sump(from sitting)?
I think you mean the tank ... the sump is where the oil pools at the bottom of the engine just before it's sucked up and dumped back into the tank. If the oil cap is on tight the excess oil will build up in the valve cover and find it's way out from there. Someone more familiar with this engine might know the likely place for it to escape from there. The oil tank has a baffle tube around the fill hole to prevent it from slopping out there. That baffle is also the cause of possible overfilling since the bottom of it is close to the full mark on the stick.
There are a few ways to make a mistake when checking and adding oil to a dry sump motor, Just be careful and pay attention until you get used to one.
