Switched wiring for GPS

One suggestion.... go to RadioShack and get a 20amp relay.

One line goes to the battery,
two lines go to ground (one for the accessory that you are powering, the other for the power source operating the relay switch)
One line goes to the accessory as power.

The wiring diagram is stamped into the relay.

You can tap into your brake light power line under your right side cover. It's in the wiring harness running just above your ECU. I don't remember the wire color but if you look under your fendor and extract your brake light bulb, you can tell which it is. The power from your brakelight circuit won't draw much power, just enough to "close the gate" on the relay when your ignition is on so you won't blow a fuse.

It should take about 15 minutes to perform if you know what you're doing... It took me closer to an hour, but if I can do it, you can.

There seems to be quite a few wires behind the left hand side panel just behind the gas tank, where the accessory socket would be if I had one. That panel is pretty easy to get to, which is another plus. Can anyone tell me which wires (colors and location please) would serve my purpose?

I took the easy option -

Removed 1 headlight and took a feed of the (side light) WIRING

Mind it only comes on when ignition is switched on

EASY CHEAP OPTION - AND GPS DON'T NEED MEGA WATTS FOR POWER

Done. Lifted the tank — not so hard after all — and discovered several unused connectors. Found one with the proper voltage that was switched with the ignition, and my buddy spliced in the GPS. Thanks for all of the advice... works like a charm.
