Speedometer

Greeting from Central Florida. I have an 2008 raodster and the speedo stop working. Went to the Triumph dealer and they wanted a small fortune for a replacement. Any thought for a replacement module or a fix. Many thanks!!!!

My fortune was about $380 when mine crapped out.
A few here have tried, but it's not repairable on the 2005. I expect the 08 Roadster is much worse to repair.

First of all, are you certain it's the speedometer? There's no crap on the speed sensor, broken wires, or loose connections?
I'd give you some wire colors to check but I'm not certain whether you have a Standard or Roadster, since the Roadster didn't come out till 2010.
Either way it's a shame the speedo's can't be easily taken apart because it can't be that hard to get a simple circuit board fixed, can it?

If the speedo stopped suddenly, it's likely a faulty wire. What model of R3 do you have? Is the speedo on the bars or on the tank?

2008 Rocket3 standard. Speedo is on the handle bar. The speedo is famous for that fault. Mechanic advised the trouble is in the unit itself. Seems to me this is a cheaply made product. I guess triumph is making a cheep product and making big bucks.

I have a 2005 with the original speedometer and it works fine. Does the speedo needle sweep like the tachometer needle when you turn the ignition switch on?

No, the tach needle makes the sweep but the speedo needle moves just a bit, as the bike moves along the needle jumps. Looking for an after market speedo to replace the original. I don't wish to do that but I have no choice at this point. I really need a replacement. Any thoughts.

I don't mean to be a PITA, but did the mechanic actually check wiring and sensor, or just best guess?

If you do have to replace, perhaps Acewell has something that will work.

The needle sweep is a self check operation. Sounds like intermittent contact problem. the speedo should have a plug on it. Disconnect it and clean the pins and reconnect. If that doesn't cure it it's probably internal to the speedo unit. Did the mechanic check the pins were clean and with proper connection? If it's the connector plug having corrosion issues a new speedo won't cure it (although it may work fine for awhile).
