I changed my oil yesterday the owners manual says 6 quarts,at 5 it was a little past the full mark I ran it today and it's still the same, how much do you put in?........sandman

I just did my oil. It was 5.5 quarts, give or take. That's on a 08 Touring. The manual said something like 6.4 litres or something there abouts. I know for sure I put a 5 quart bottle and halfish of a 1 quart.

5.4 quarts with a filter change I believe according to the owners manual. I use the M1 P/N 110 oil filter, so six quarts fills it right to the full mark every time now. That's with the bike level, not on the kick stand. Very important.

On a side note, I know some here are concerned the longer M1 filter will interfere with the back of the front fender/tire, or the chrome cover won't fit right. The M1 110 filter does neither. The filter is only about 3/4" longer than stock. The cover fit's the filter fine, only leaving about 3/4" on the engine side not covered. Not really noticeable. As for interfering with the front tire/fender, not a chance.

Thanks for the info. Do you think not draining the sump might be the difference?

That would do it even with a hot just switched of mottorcycles there is still a little oil in the sump,
I open sump and oil tank plugs (all 3 plugs) at same time while hot let it drain over night while bike is supported from both sides, going back to it a couple of time and leaning it to one side for a little while and then there other side before leaving it to completely drain over night I also use a flushing product to may sure I get all the crap out. End result it takes a little over 5 litres and I get 10,000 klm out of it, I also use a full synthetic high quality oil

I do the "let it drain all night" thing also. Cold oil or hot oil, makes no difference. Level the bike, remove all three drain plugs, and let the bike sit over night. All possible oil will then be drained out. Then fill the tank checking it as you go. It should take around 5.5 quarts using the stock oil filter. If it doesn't, somethings wrong.

That's interesting that what I use and the bike seems to like it on my second oilchange since changing and either your mechanic didn't drain it properly or gave a bit over a litre of oil for free...... mine take a a bit over 5 litres and that with a oil filter change as well

they must have got all the old oil out cos its crystal clear after being run.they put 4lts on the invoice but it cost 52 euros so i imagine they used more than 4lts anyways im happy !

Hanso, I've always wondered about the safety of using a flushing product, have you always had good results with it? Also would it be safe to use STP injector cleaner?

I recently had an oil and filter change and the mechanic used exactly 5.5 litres which filled to the top mark. He used the same method, took all plugs out and let drain for a fair while.

I just use Motul 3100 20w50 cos I change every 3000 kms and can't justify the expense of full syn. here in Brazil. Motul 3100 (22 Reais or 11,50 dollars) Motul 5100 (38 Reais or 19,80 dollars) and that's with a strong exchange rate.

Cheers
