When I turn on ignition I get no lights or gauge sweeps until I hit starter button. Then I get good start and idle and gauge lights and sweeps. Any ideas why bike has to be running before I get signs of life?

I think that you should clean the bsttery terminals and make sure they are tight.
A couple of guys honked the horn and that made a spark at battery terminals so then it worked.

No joy, terminals clean and connections tight. By the way, my odometer bit the dust a couple years ago and my speedometer went South a few months ago, although the led's at the bottom of the gauge still light up when called for. Couple years ago I installed a small diameter(2") GPS based speedo/odometer between and on top of the speedo and tach gauges and it works and is accurate with one huge problem, it is only readable in a very dark garage, completely unreadable in any kind of daylight. Do you know of a GPS based small diameter digital speedo/odo gauge that can be read in daylight?

WITH A 12 VOLT TEST LIGHT (SOrry caps)
turn on ignition and check the fuses on one side then on the other side of each fuse.
