I repacked the jards a few months back which was great for few thousand klms.On the advice of a friend ,I used fire blankets cut to size and wrapped them up in adhesive backed foil.
But the loudeness come back and the popping got worse.
On top of that, the material expanded and jammed the baffles in so tight I could not pull them out with any thing in my shed,so I took them to the local exhaust shop.
They couldnt get the baffles to budge either,so I gave them permission to cut the pipes so they could bash them out.
Eventually they come out and I re wrapped them in rock wool ,a ceramic fibre based material, then did them again in adhesive backed foil and finished it off with wire wrapped around the baffle.

I took it for a ride and got the best sound ever, much of the popping has gone and the idle has improved.
Its a deep thump that is quieter and smoother than before but it hasnt lost any power/torque

Fingers crossed it will stay this way. At least the rock wool is thinner than my last effort,so I will be able to remove them easier.

Could it be the adhesive backed foil that's making them difficult to remove?

When I did my VTX baffles I wrapped them real tight with plastic food wrap to get them in. It just melts and effectively burns off and makes them real easy to remove.

Nothing better than getting the sound just right though eh?

I made it too thick I think and it swelled a little

Jars do have a helluva note to them!!

Im getting ready for a 1000klm ride through the southwest right now(3.30am) and I didnt want others to have to listen to them all day.Ive been told that sitting on my right or left flanks is pretty painfull. So hopefuly it wont be now.

What if you do not re-pack the baffles? How loud do they get and do you have to re-tune if you do not? I have about 10 K miles on my Jards and have not re-packed nor have I noticed any difference in the sound. Curious stuff!

I personlly do not like the sound without the baffles. Its too loud and too raw, they splutter like some old stock car at a smash em up derby.

At 10k miles they will be ok ,around 40000-45000 klms most of them blow out.The fibreglass insulation in the baffle has a seam in it and eventually the exhaust gases will find the seam.
My RH side was the 1st to go,maybe there is more gas flow there because it is the shorter side.
With my rock wool repack I have carefully overlapped the join.

I got some really positive remarks about the sound today,I hope it stays that way.

You need to move to a more stable place like WA LOL.

I spent all day listening to the growl. The best was when some dude on a Dyna with a 103ci engine witha few goodies wanted to take me on.
The sound of the Jards at 4500 in 1st and 2nd was amazing:mrgreen:

Please excuse my ignorance but just how do you go about removing the baffles from the Jar mufflers to re-pack? Thanks.
