I was thinking about buying some generic 4.5" light shells just to fit these. You do not even have to worry about crappy reflectors and lenses in the light shells as these LEDs would replace all that.

Those are pretty cool. I'll probably just run without for now. (Not turning them on) I'm getting nervous about money. I'll be retired in 2 weeks.

Oh man, I feel for you -- I see that day coming as the light of the on-coming train in the tunnel, with two children in college and a house still demanding payments and and the property tax went up 9% last year and inflation was under 1%.

There are Chinese H3 leds that are available on Ebay, dead cheap and good as anything.

Should be a drop-in replacement in the stock buckets. I got some JW Speaker variants for myself and installation was a doddle (had to snip the cables, though; I just used some Posilocks to wire mine in, but putting the appropriate connector in there to match the reflector above would probably be the best way to do it.

Only downside is that your non-LED headlight will start looking like a yellow candle compared to the pure white of these.

Then again, you'll basically never have to buy new bulbs again, most likely. And the option to go all LED is not hugely expensive:

'Don't worry, be happy' - I found lots of costs disappear with retirement- from earlier threads you must be retiring even earlier than I did at 54 1/2. A great way to make the best of the remaining years. My old man turns 87 this week and still spend heaps of time volunteering for various organizations. He (and I) was delighted he got his license extended for another year as he has macular degeneration and was expecting to lose his license this year.

There does come a time when you need to honestly ask yourself if you're supposed to be behind the wheel, though. It's not just vision, either, it's other types of degeneration also. Like that old guy (86) in the US, the Santa Monica farmers market incident. He was pushing the brake for all he was worth. The brake pedal to the far right, that is. 10 dead, 60+ injured. Getting the pedals confused happens a fair bit and more to women and old people. Reaction time also goes in the toilet as you get old.

At the very least we need at least yearly checkups of old people before we let them have that license. Maybe every 6 months after you reach a certain age.

That is why you have to go to the ophthalmologist every year for a test - Dad's was well over an hour - not just read these eye chart lines and off you go. Not saying I like being his passenger though, he is a big enough pain in the ass when I'm driving, "close the window", "turn the radio down", "slow down" "get into that lane", on on and on. Say anything about his speeding, erratic driving or whatever and get your head bitten off. Fathers, you gotta love em or else get rid of them from your life.

Luckily my oldies are keen 'exit' and 'right to die' activists so have their kits ready with no intention to end up in a nursing home. Something far more important than gun rights.

Yeah, I would also prefer to check out quickly and efficiently when it becomes clear things are going seriously downhill. What's the point of being some package laying around in a bed suffering?

But yeah, personally I'd like to see actual stress tests and driving simulators and reaction tests etc be incorporated into testing the elderly who want to keep driving. But hopefully eventually we'll get useable self-driving cars that will alleviate the issue, or better yet PRT systems.
