I have used several types and hardnesses of Gel. They all get hot if left in the sun for hours. It all depends HOW HOT it gets and how well it can dissipate after. That's like saying leather can indeed crack and peel. Yeah if you buy a cheap leather, I would think that would be the same with gel , a cheap gel pad or an expensive one. A gel for $30 is it the Same as one for $120?
Now I going to make an educated assumption (based on personal experience) that the sun in Toronto is not as fierce as that in Central Spain. I have seen a guy fry an egg (albeit slowly) on a Harley saddle here in summer.
We already get well over 60ªc in side a car in the sun after an hour - and it's only just June. In summer LCD's go black (about 85ºC) - Loctite can degrade at that heat.
Wrapped inside a waterproof vinyl bag on an insulating plastic base Gel cools slowly esp if ambient air temps are in the high 30's - mid 40's ºC. And slower still if you're covering most of the dissipation surface with your bum.
If you leave Gel uncovered for 6 hours in July Sun in Central Spain - it is well above 70ºC. But all you need is one thin insulating radiation shield to stop the sun.
The 3D mesh stuff has started a mini commotion here. A friend asked me to get him a couple of covers for their Classic "Vespas" for their club runs. Vespa club is now trying to find "the source" - They talking an order of 100's - close to 1000. Looks a bit odd but it is the best all weather distance riding seat cover I have ever used. Beats leather hands down. The covers I got were designed for use on scooters left all day in the sun on Cyprus.
