Just got back from getting the recall done (350 mile round trip to dealer) and the rpms are hanging up around 2000 - I can back right off the throttle in any gear and it drops then stays there sometimes for 5 seconds sometimes as much as 20. When I clutch in under 2000 rpms it simply climbs back up and stays again. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Should I go back to the Idle/Stall sticky? Has anyone else had this issue?

Welcome to the club, Ephraim. Mine did the same thing after Service Bulletin 385 and doing it again after Safety Recall 386. I think it's more erratic now than it was before - surges to 2000 or 1800, hangs there after the clutch is engaged (forget about engine braking!).

One last time to the shop and then if it doesn't get fixed, I'll be saying Goodbye to all the fine folks here on the forum. There's no reason to own a bike that cannot be considered reliable - too many good bikes on the market for that.

Captain Rich - I just talked with the Triumph folks - they think that there is a software glitch that got downloaded onto our bikes with #386. Said they think they can fix it but I'm going to try another manual adjustment to override the computer tomorrow. (see "Idle/Stall fix" sticky) I did it on the previous stall problem and it worked great.

Ephraim,
I dropped mine off at the dealer this morning and he immediately got in touch with Triumph's technical guru's. They didn't mention anything about a glitch but did provide a whole series of checks to make, while the bike is running and failing. On my trip up there mine continued to hang somewhere above 2000 RPM any time I tried to come off throttle and would shoot up to 2800 RPM when the clutch was disengaged before settling back somewhere above the 2000 mark.

Triumph mentioned there were aware of 1 other R3 that was exhibiting these symptoms (I'm thinking that's because not alot of people have gotten their bikes in for the 386 Recall yet) - I'm guessings that's you. I'll be interested in what your dealer indicates is the final fix.

(BTW, I'm an '06 Classic, all stock engine/tune/muffler/etc, and have 16,500 mi...bike was purchased new in May of '06)

Rich - I went in this AM and watched my guy do the voltage setting on the idle stepper motor, downloaded an updated tune (I haven't been home yet to check out what number it is on TuneBoy, but I know I had 20144 in yesterday - basic Triumph tune for Classic with aftermarket pipes, no cat), and then let it run for a good bit. Everything is stable and running perfectly - will report back if there are any other changes (only done about 50 miles so far)

FYI: the low setting for the voltage was right on, but the high setting was way under - did you find out if yours needed changing?

If this doesn't work for you, I would recommend you get TuneBoy and run your bike in open loop (no O2 sensor) - that will solve your idle problem

I'm basically testing this thing out, before I go back to TuneBoy

Thanks, DC. My 'fix' lasted about 1 week, then it started slipping into the new habits. Let me know how yours works out. Didn't get a chance to talk to the mechanic today, just the owner of the dealership, so I don't know what adjustments were made first time around.

Rich,

I tried the "Idle/Stall" sticky fix today (manually adjusting the idle screw) and while it worked for my stall problem it did not work on this problem. It continues to hang up at 2,000. Let me know if they figure anything out with your bike - the dealer here wanted mine back to try and figure this out but they are almost 200 miles away. I think were going to see others with this problem after downloading 386. Good luck - I hope you don't have to find another bike - I love mine.

Same thing. High idle, dealer is at a loss. All the numbers checked good when they loaded the 386 map again . Still had high idle on the way home . Said to hell with it put the 20050 tune boy tune back in. Happy Happy joy joy :D :D works great I have to say that I am done with Triumph messing with my R3 tunes. :)

Hey G-Man,

Thanks for the encouragement. It will take a lot more than this problem to make me walk away from this bike. I have rode quite a few others and have absolutely no desire to ride anything else. This ride was made for me! Just getting a little tired of this problem.

I assume I have the new 386 tune on my bike. Had the cam chain gear replaced two weeks ago and on the way home noticed that the bike idled fast (2000 rpms). It would hang up there for about 15 or 20 seconds even after the bike warmed up. When I got home I call the dealer and they said bring it back so they could look at it. I guess he did'nt realize I was 150 miles away. Anyway I pondered this a couple of days and decided that they did not do the 12 minute tune on the bike because I found that the radiator fan was not plugged in. I did the 12 minute tune and all has been good since, no problem with the fast idle.
