I noticed when I was putting my relays on for my headlights that my overflow tank was dry had just had it serviced less than 2000 miles ago, I remember a few days earlier in traffic my little red light had came home I just figured extreme heat but after I put in 50-50 mix in the reserve tank and went out for a ride I came back and reserve tank had went down quite a bit so I brought the levels back up checked later everything was okay obviously they had not put everything back up to level when they worked on my bike. I am now doing my own service work hundred dollars an hour and they cannot put antifreeze in

Let thebikecool and pull the capand checkthe level....yo should see coolant right at the top...maybe some drops will spill out as well......then bull the bear claw....big silver thing on left side......there is a 10mm bolt holding it located in the front on the handlebar side. Once this is removed check your resevoir bottle level...there are markings for min and max.....since yourcold fill it to the max line with 50/50 mix from any auto parts store......i getthegreencolorsince thatswhats in there now......put back together.....ride.....enjoy :D

My overflow tank has not had any coolant in it for about 40k miles. The times I did put coolant in it the bike projectile vomited all over the street. I probably have a bad radiator cap, but as it stands now the bike runs great, does not overheat or vomit, so as far as I am concerned there is no problem...:D

When I got my baby home I let it run for a little while I entered my home for a drink of water, lag time must have been a few minutes and then I turned it off. When I returned a short time later I found coolant on my garage floor. I refiled the coolant bottle and forgot about till the next time I road her. I took her out a few days later and upon my return I did as usual. I let her cool down before I covered her and found a small amount of coolant on garage floor. I really don't have a clue what this could be. Many thanks!!!

When you say you refilled the coolant bottle, do you mean you filled it to the Cold line, or that you actually filled it?

If you actually filled it all the way up, then that's the problem, too much coolant. If you filled it to the Cold line and it still puked coolant, replace your radiator cap.

The above assumes you haven't opened the cooling system, and thus introduced air into the system. If you have opened it, replaced a hose, drained the coolant or something like that, you may need to bleed the system.

That's the lack of details that prompted my other question .... how did you know it overheated and how "Filled" did you add coolant to the expansion bottle? Is the fan running, etc?

A little coolant on the ground can mean all kinds of things, filling the bottle can be too full, if the light didn't come on how can it be "overheating"?

Not getting any answers here. Know what I mean GP?

Yeah, since the bike's an '06, if it has a reasonable number of miles for its age the radiator cap is a prime suspect. Those things have a habit of deteriorating over time and will cease holding their rated pressure. When that happens, the boiling point drops and out comes the coolant.

I carry a new one in my saddlebag.

You do not need to pull the bearclaw just to check the fluid level , from the front you can see the overflow bottle turn the lights off or wait until it gets dark and shine a torch(flashlight) on to the bottle and you will see the level.
If you want to top it off you will have to remove the bearclaw or get a very long bit of plastic tubing and go to work.:D

Hi Lea
I have a 09 standard which i've had from new and i have found it to be sensitive to the
amount of coolant it holds..and when i first got the bike it drove me nuts  i'd top it up and it would spit it out..top it back up and it would spit it out..it was only a slight amount each time..so i just left it alone and it's been fine ever since and what i do now is check the coolant at the resovoir bottle after a ride and just before i put her to bed and it's always at the same level and never any on the floor
