oil change interval

Recommendation needed..What is the Best and most popular Engine Oil in Oz mate?

I am about to change mine (not done this before cos paid the dealer thru the nose)
any tips or things I should know about ?

Not sure mate cos i was paying the dealer also while it was still in warranty so the next change will be my first at home

Thanks, everybody....good news to me that's for sure....

Now, 'bout the oil filter cover....any advice on getting it off

Thanks,
Bill Montogmery

Can't help with the 'off' if you've really mashed it on, but you can change the filter next time to a Mobil M-108 (if memeory serves) and not have that particular problem. I'd have to look again to verify the number, but that filter holds the cover can just like the stocker (easy off/easy on).

It doesn't matter what brand.....as long as its 10/40 or 15/50 you will be fine.....you can use full synthetic or semi synthetic ......but brand really doesn't matter since they all have to pass the same standard

Only thing I would add to that is what ever oil is selected it must be JASO-MA rated due to the Rocket having a wet clutch.

That 10K miles or 16K km interval only applies if you use full synthetic. If you are using semi-synthetic you may be voiding the warranty (semi-synthetic is only used when the bike is new up to the first 500 - 600 miles).

The "voiding" of the warranty is my personal opinion only...I'll ask Dink what his perspective is on that when I see him tomorrow.

At the very least if you are, for whatever reason, using semi-synthetic oil "all" the time then, yes, it would be a good idea to change it a lot sooner than the recommended interval for full synthetic.

And for those of you who change out your oil at 5,000 miles regardless (or if it's 5,000 km which only equals 3,150 miles)...I"m glad it's your money.

Even California, for all it's quirks and stupidity, has recognised that changing your auto oil at the interval of 3,000 miles (during "normal" use driving) is too much and is a big waste of oil...we are talking California here.

Agreed forgot to add that!!
Molino.......the owners manual does state you can use either for your oil change......but my recommendation would be full syn no matter what.....it's far superior

Rotella T-6 15/40 doesn't have the friction modifiers to f__k the clutch up... has zinc n all the good stuff.. then I add the expensive motorcycle full synthetic oil after that gallon.. I run Rotella non synthetic in all my old trucks unless I rebuild the motor... then add ZDD(?) to regular bring the oil up to pre-emission standards.. I don't like runnin' the camshafts flat without zinc... Paul

What does the bike being under warranty have to do with you not doing the oil change yourself?

the period of which the bike needs to be serviced by a qaulified mechanic ="which i am not" is what it has to do with it they stamp the service manual to say it has been done and if it hasnt they void the warranty.
I know it only has to be done every 16,000 kilometers but i like to do it every 8,000
now that i dont need the dealer stamp i will do it myself.

and Molinoman
As for cost i dont think im going to go broke by changing my oil more often it isnt that expensive
