Hi Guys, I had a problem today when I went to start my bike it did not do the self test where all idiot lights come on and gauges swing. Bike started but sounded like the battery was flat which it wasn't. Self test occured after it was running? Rode to town and speedo did not work, fueled up started OK but no self test until running and speedo worked fine all the way home???? Any ideas???

Tried the same thing a few years ago on my 2005 Classic.
I took it to the bike "stealer" and they claimed that the speedo and tacho needed to be replaced. ($1200)
I paid the money and it worked after that. Maybe they just fixed a loose connection and replaced the speedo and tacho just to make some money, I'll never know but I was happy to get it working.
Of course I checked the ignition switch and a few other things before I took it to the "stealer"

Dear Dr.

Disconnect both battery leads for about 5-10 minutes. Reconnect and perform the "12 minute tune" properly (per factory instructions) and call me in the morning!

1. start bike without touching the throttle or any other instrumentation or electrical controls (such as your headlight switch)

2. allow bike to run until radiator fan switches on

3. when radiator turns on allow the bike to run for at least 12 minute, again, without touching the throttle

That should "forcibly adapt" your ECU to its factory, default settings and possibly get your instruments to sweep (by re-initializing their startup sequence via the computer) the way they're supposed to when you turn on your ignition (not to the point of cranking the starter). If the instruments sweep by following this procedure, it is very possible that your problem has been solved. If not, you will have to try to trace the problem to any number of other electrical system or component faults.

May the force be with you!

I had 12 hours to spare this morning so I stripped out my ignition switch and checked inside, all OK I must have fitted the Eastern Beaver just in time. Checked all connections and they seem fine. put it back together but still no needle sweep until fired up and then only the tacho. Hooked up the computer and Tune ECU and it showed error code P1500 speed circuit fault . This fault would not clear. Googled it and found it could be a dirty speed sensor, its was a bit dirty but did not cure the fault. Will do a bit more research before I try a new sensor. Wish me luck.
P.S. I think it would be easier to change the plugs up the exhaust than remove the ignition switch!!!!

Sorry Phil I forgot to say I did the 12 min tune but no good. did not even reset my tune?
