Nearly A Captain - Some Questions...

Hi all,

I just introduced myself in the 'Meet the Members' area but this is my first proper post.

I'm hoping to purchase a new 2009 Rocket III (standard version, not Classic or Tourer) in the next week or so and use Triumphs current $2,500 free accessories offer to add some bits. I've been reading this and other forums for a while now but still have some questions:

1. Do the Triumph fog lamps work well as daytime driving lights? i.e. will they catch the eye of cagers about to do something stupid in front of you?
2. My wife is 5'2" tall and we'll have the Triumph touring seat. Would it be best to go for the low or high sissy bar for the missus?
3. My wife likes a relatively quiet ride (if you'll pardon the inuendo) so I wont be getting the TORS or other aftermarket exhaust. I was therefore wondering if it's benficial to get just the cat bypass? From what I've read, the tune that Triumph installs with the cat bypass and TORS actually restricts power a little by keeping the secondaries further closed at certain times. Does the same apply with the tune used with just the cat bypass?
4. Does the Triumph fuel gauge (the actual gauge, not just the low fuel lamp) actually give reasonable readouts on the 2009s? I know that earlier ones raised the red flag rather early.
5. Is the GiPro ATRE easy to fit? Their website doesn't have instructions to download for the Rocket.
6. I'm 6'1". Is the Summer Screen likely to be much noisier and allow lots more buffeting than the Roadster (taller) screen?

Hi) #1) A big yes. They look cool too. MUCH nicer than some of the cheap alternatives like Rivco's.
2) No clue I don't carry passengers but I'd suspect the taller one is more comfy
3)Triumph tunes SUCK!!!:tumble:Yes they do close down the 2ndries.
Ear plugs are cheap!!! not only cutting down unwanted wind noise, but making performance pipes sound GREAT!!;-)
4) The fuel guages read empty very early, before the light & I have 8L left in tank when the( standard fuel warning) light comes on.
5)I think so, there's info posted on the forum about them.( I don't have one)
6)IMO... summerscreen & the big one SUCK! horrible wind deflections into your head with vibes on the summer screen & & lot more vibes/high speed instability on the big one. The sports screen is the one to go for.. Amazingly good design.:RockOn:

The Tors/cat delete system doesn't make that much noise under normal riding. It's when you grab a handful you hear them and I sopose like alot of us you don't ride the bike like you stold it with the
misses hanging on:exit:.With the Triumph tune and the Gipro ( set it on no 3 for fullpower) the bike goes real good!! and there is a mounting instruction for the Rocket fairly simple installation. For me the sports screen is best you can mount in chrome sleeves of different lengths to suit the angle you like (theres a how to do in the tech. division )I would go for a Triumph clock instead of the fuel gauge as stated above the fuel light for most of the bikes come on when theres about 8 liters left you get used to it. But anyway congrats on the bike you've chosen the best model!!:Tip-Hat:

Just taking the cat off will make it louder.I ran mine for two years with the cat delete and standard pipes.Triumph stuck the tors and cat delete tune in and it ran fine.If you leave the cat delete on and put tors on it wouldnt be much louder its removing the cat that alters the sound.

I also ran the bypass and stock pipes. The sound was altered to a little deeper resonance. Performance wise it didn't really improve until I got a Tuneboy and opened the secondaries up and got a better tune installed. That really let the ponies run. As to the sissy bar you should have your misses try out sitting on a model with a low and a high and see which suits her better. Where it hits her back will change if you change the stock seat to a touring gel. The GiPro is easy to install looking at other threads, but there's no standard mounting bracket. You might get hold of Flip at Flipmeisters and see if he's working on a bracket for the GiPro for Rocket bars. A fuel guage is only as good as the calibration. Triumphs fuel gage on my old Trophy was way off until I reset it. There are some "how to's" on resetting the gage so it is more accurate to the tank's volume. If you do most of your own wrench work you can set the bike up pretty inexpensively, if not, you'll be having the dealer do some pricey mods to make it suit you to a tee. Not to worry, it's worth every nickel.

I thought that the GiPro ATRE allowed the secondaries to open as far in 1st and 2nd as they do in 4th and 5th. Is that not correct?

Its been so long since I had my secondarys anthing but 100% open but in looking at some of the tunes I say probably not as all the tunes don't open 100% Until after 4000 rpms. The real question is does the atre stand for atomatic timing retard which is nothing to do with anything but timining but if it did anything like mimic other gears like 4th and 5th or even third then there is not a tune I find that has them open 100% all the way across the board just different variations some starting at 4000 some at 4500 this is if it makes it mimic the gear on every detail. If it juts deals with timing then well A/F would not be affected either speedo corection max speed all the other would not be affected at all. And well Tune boy gives you axcess to most everything timing programable air fule mixtures in the sense of throttle position verses rpm rev limiters speedometer corrections as they are 6% to 7% off. It also allows you the diagnostics needed to evaluate and save you some money if your tps sensor is out of position it is easily set with tuneboy if it bad you can remove it and install a neww one and set it along with correcting Idle position locations replacing the idle stepper motor. it has functions to check the fan adjust the temps in which the fan turns on and off. Seedo and tach tests and and much more. pound for pound a worth while unit. now there is two types of gigpro one mess with the timing one just gives gear position. I think if ou need to know gear position well then that unit is great. but other then that I would rather have tune boy myself. just ask around and make your mind up. Don't just rely on one Captains position.

Mark, yes the Gi pro opens the secondaries when you select a gear. Looks like 100% to me but someone else will have to varify that.
As far as the speed limiter, it says it gets rid of it but I can't say for sure as I don't have gps to accuratly check mph.
