I've heard that Triumph released two versions of the 2013 Roadster with tuning differences between them. I've called two local dealers inquiring about the this, and neither one is aware of any differences, one even suggested that it was probably an Internet rumor and that I get him proof there are 2013 models with different tunes??? Does anyone know about this? Since the dealers don't seem to know anything, how can I be sure the bike I order is the one with the restrictions removed?

Also I am unable to find a shop with a demo roadster, I am curious about the handling differences between the Touring and the Roadster, are the differences significant ? Does the larger rear tire on the Roadster make the bike harder to handle on the twisties? Or easier?

I'm almost there!.......... :)

The only info I've been able to find on the new (de-restricted) Roadster was posted on here. Guess it could be a rumour. Have to say I'm a little skeptical as youd think the reasons for the restriction still apply. Of course no dealer is going to tell you there's a better one coming while he still has 'old' stock to shift. Anyone actually seen one with the white stripes?

As for the bigger tyre, not having ridden a Touring I can't compare but it does take a little getting used to. I don't think the handling is worse, per se, but you do need to use your body weight a little differently. You'll quickly get the hang of it. I mostly hear journalists simply stating the wide rear = worse handling as if it's fact but I reckon it's because they jump from bike to bike and don't have time to get in the groove, so to speak. My simple rule is to lean my body more than the bike and be prepared to counter steer a little more. i find it flops over from side to side no trouble. Yes, I'm talking about the bike.......

I haven't seen one in the wild with the white stripes, but here's a pretty source on it.

I actually put some money down on a 2013 with recent changes. The dealer is telling me late April or early May before the new ones arrive, which is consistent with the web news on this.

It's going to be a long couple of months!

Well there you go. Thanks carlson. So Jim, you just need to make sure you get the right one!

By the way, just checked the Triumph Australia web site. Not a word. The 2013 model is as before. Maybe we'll get it next year.

Have to say Triumph seems to making life difficult for itself. They also have the new Street Triple which is being heralded as a vast improvement over the 2012 model. Both are selling at the same price. I imagine there'll be some bargains in due course.

Pocket Rocket,
I have ridden a RT - did not push real hard (it wasn't mine) and now have 7K miles on my R3R. Long story short I would be surprised if the RT would handle twisties as well as the R3R - rider talent being equal. I have a big V-twin also; but, this R3R is the ****! The ABS is awesome good as well.

I do like the new stripes and shall likely add some to my fast flat black. I prefer the chrome to stay chrome and with trip K&Ns, exhaust, PCV+AT, Tune ECU, and HansO, I'd be real surprised if a stock 2013 would hang with an older one set up this way.

Note that for performance the slower red has also been scrubbed. ;-}
You're gonna lubbit!!!

.

So Carlson you ordered one with the recent changes, did the dealer confirm to you that there were earlier 2013 models with tuning differences?

He did indeed. The dealer had a 2013 model on the floor without the changes, but it had something like 40 miles on it. Since I'm very particular about break-in procedure - ride hard with much acceleration and engine decel, changing the oil a couple of times in the first 50 miles - I wanted one with basically zero miles. They ordered a new one for me and then a couple of days later the news on the model update came out, which I requested right away. The dealer had to get confirmation from Triumph on the new model, but they eventually did, and I should have one of the first new ones here in the midwest.

As far as I can tell, the "old" 2013 is simply a 2012 with a fall 2012 production date, and the "new" 2013's incorporate the changes and won't be ready for market anywhere until March for England and later for everywhere else.

Given my (limited) experience with Triumph dealers, you'll probably have to educate your dealer on the changes and then be pushy about the model you demand.

Yeah I agree, unfortunately since the dealers around here don't seem to be aware of the differences, I'm not sure how I'll go about making sure I get the updated model?? I plan on visiting the dealer next week and giving them a deposit and ordering the bike....... I'll talk to them about it again then.

Now.....Matte black with the white stripe? Or Phantom Black with the red stripes?

Decisions decisions......

While down at Phillip Isl we had a day off between testing and racing another marshal and I went into Melbourne for the day we went to Peter Stevens and they said that we will not be getting the stripe model here in Auss he was not sure about the derestiction on the new ones

Cycle Torque , a well respected and long established motorcycle magazine here in Oz has an article on the 2013 R3R in it's latest issue. Confirms that the factory has removed the restrictions as claimed. Details all the other mods and changes , no mention of two different versions though.
