Memories of Harlistas in Puerto Rico

Picric Acid is different beast to aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid), and will blow your head off rather than cure a headache.Picric acid - Wikipedia

They do have a weird association though. It is apparently made from phenol too and in WW1 German efforts to control the availability of phenol, the precursor to picric acid, emphasize its importance in World War I as an explosive for ordinance. Supposedly Germans (in USA?) were reported to have bought US supplies of phenol and converted it to acetylsalicylic acid, i.e., aspirin, to keep it from the Allies.

I suppose that was possible as the USA did not join the Allies until April 2, 1917. I wonder if they had declared war on April 1 whether no-one would have believed them ;):D
Well there you go , another school day ;)
I don't know why I thought picric acid could be made from asprin ? Clearly a myth you have jus dispelled ! :)

Me too - Y Fronts !! ;):D:D:D

Back to school - not a chemist but some compounds are reversible to the constituents via further processes so it would presumably be possible to revert aspirin to phenol and then to produce picric acid.

The blackboards ready for the chemists amongst us.;):D:D
