Aside from the cost, how would we know if a new model tire from another manufacturer would be better functionally than the ones the bike comes with?

snuffy said it: competition. Functionality you ask? My take on Avon, from hearsay, is that it's not to my taste for a long distance touring tire, either. ME880 "Marathon", what a joke One coast to coast trip, based on some of the mileage stated here and there, will cost many a new rear skin. Don't base it on my mileage. I was way past being stupid with the miles I put on my first Rocket rear tire. Although, I've gotten the same miles out of Marathons on smaller bikes (1100, 1400), but the Rocket has a lot more, get-up-and-went than those puny V-twins. Now if Bridgestone with their DTC technology applied towards our needs they'd be worthy of the title Triathlon Champion.
