Nice story. Goes to show that with $135 to $150 plus per hour we are charged, the techs are getting screwed.
Pay the man a hourly living wage straight away. And also give him a monthly stipend for his tools.
 
My buddy was a lifelong motorcycle mechanic, owned his own shop for 10 or 15 years, this was few years back, local dealer offered him $10/hr.
Triumph, not Harley, but same thing. Their rate was $105/hr at the time, if I recall
