Hello all!

Thanks to all who gave me input on how to come up with possible solutions to my idle problems. It appears that the problem is solved and it had to do with the TPSs as you recommended. It sounded like a simple solution, but like a lot of things it turned into a nightmare. The problem was with the dealership I asked to change the primary TPS.
They changed the primary and then called me to tell me that the secondary TPS was physically broken and needed to be replaced as well. I gave them the "go ahead" and that's where things got ugly. I got another call telling me that there was an "open short" with the ECM and it needed to be replaced. I had a real problem with the "open short" explanation and knew a snow job when I heard it. There is no such thing as an "open short". When I took the bike in there was no problem except the idle issue. Now everything was broken??? I didn't believe what they were telling me and went in to see for myself. I told them to put my bike back together, without replacing the ECM and have it ready for me by the end of the week. After they let me know that the bike was ready I picked it up and noticed a sever hesitation at around 3000 RPM. I took it back and the service manager acknowledged that the technician reported a "slight" hesitation problem. They didn't find it important to tell me that before I took the bike on the road. I was somewhat irate (really pissed) that they sent an unsafe bike on the road. I decided to investigate the issue myself.

The first thing that happened when I removed the bear claw cover was that the air intake plenum fell out on the floor. The coolant overflow tank was hanging only by its hoses and a screw fell out as well. A good thing that the screw didn't fall into the throttle body. Actually it wouldn't have mattered since the secondary throttles were stuck closed and wouldn't move. My "pissedness" increased by the minute! I then connected my new TuneECU to the bike and looked for the error message. It said "high voltage or short to battery". I then disconnected the new TPS and the error disappeared to be replaced with error "low voltage or short to ground". Obviously the ECU was working just fine. The problem was with the new TPS. I asked the dealer to replace the TPS with a new one but he didn't want to budge, telling me by implication that I didn't know what I was talking about. I did have the old broken unit and crazy glued the broken mounting tab back on. I removed the new TPS and found that the throttles were able to move now. The dealer installed the TPS the wrong way!!! They installed it with the secondary throttles in the close position when it clearly states that the throttles must be fully open during installation of the secondary TPS. I wasn't sure if the wrong installation damaged the TPS, so I installed the old repaired one. It worked just fine. I informed the dealer about their f#%k up and demanded a new TPS since I cant rely on a crazy glued TPS not to disintegrate during a long ride. First they didn't want to budge and only after a threat to talk to management did they order a new TPS. After I installed the new unit I found that the primary TPS was greatly out of adjustment as well. I got everything to where it should be and now the bike runs well again. However, something happened to the air plenum and manifold and they didn't want to go back to stay in place. I ordered a K&N filter set for under the bear claw and now ride a somewhat modified bike. The low idle speed problem seems to be gone. The bike also starts very different now. It no longer revs up to 2000 and drops down to about 800 but starts at about 1000 and much fewer cranks than before. A great improvement.

With the after market pipes and the K&N filters the bike sounds very different. At speed under load at about 3000RPM and above during acceleration I can hear the air intakes sounding like a popping machine gun! I may have to put covers on the filters to modify the sound. The popping noises during deceleration when pushing the motor is still happening and short of riching the A/F ratio will stay.

FYI - the reason I went to that incompetent dealership, an Indian/Triumph dealer in St. Paul, was that "Moto Primo" my usual dealer didn't have any time slots open top match my schedules. The moral of the story is: stay with what you know! I did send a strong letter of complaint to Triumph North America in Atlanta. I have not heard back from them as yet. I am absolutely certain that they will trip all over themselves to apologize for having inept dealerships approved who do not have Triumph trained technicians on staff.

Again, many thanks for your help!

@ idk

The error code for the bad installed TPS is "High Voltage or Short to Battery". That was the initial error they misinterpreted as an "open short". Grrrrrrrrrrr They did charge me a lot of money to release my bike after they screwed it up. Anyway . . . I did get the Tune ECU package that helped me determine what the problem was. Without it I couldn't have set the TPSs to the correct positions.
The pipes I have are Jardines without the Cat. Converter. The bike always had a bit of popping going downhill pushing the engine with closed throttle. With the Jardine pipes the popping got a lot worse. I am now looking at enriching the idle mixture a bit to see if the popping goes away. If not, that's OK as well. It'll keep the sleepy drivers awake!

Thanks for your interest and reply.
