That's going to be my next big modification, I just don't want to make it unreliable or a fuel sucking hog like my MINI.
Is it just a matter of dropping in the new cams and having it tuned again?
It is a little more involved. The gas tank and cam cover removed and radiator needs to be drained and removed. Also the water pump. Get some paint to mark the cam chain in reference to the cam gears and crank gear. You must get everything perfectly lined up. I bent two torx bits getting the cam ladder off. It was really torqued down. Then remove the cam chain tensioner. I ended up replacing all of the cam ladder bolts because I thought they might be stretched. It is difficult to keep the cams in position while tightening the cam ladder back up so the Triumph tool is handy. Everything is spelled out in the service manual, including locating TDC and I had help from Toystoretom, who is a mechanic by trade. Also you need new gaskets, which like all of the other stuff is way overpriced. I still shimed the cams to make sure they were in spec. They may be drop in, but since you are there, you might as well check it.
I loaded Nev's tune and went to by dyno guy and was heart broken to see that I lost hp. I thought it might be that the K&Ns weren't flowing enough and went with Uni's. But that was not the issue. I then loaded the previous tune I had and was back to where I was orginially. The tuner was able to scrape a few more hp out of it. I post the dyno sheets when I get home.
I get about 30-35 mpgs, when I am moderate on the throttle. I don't see a huge jump when I am conservative and highway only.
I bought Nev's cams when the AU dollar was about .65 to the US dollar, so I think I did good. I'm sure they would be over a grand now. I would be tempted to contact Carpenter and see how much their cams are for the Rocket. I think they offer some for stock pistons, etc.
I pretty much knew what was involved with cam replacement, I was wondering if it needed stuff like special shims, head mod ... stuff like that. Thanks for the info, it's on my wish list filed under "Someday". lol
That's a great post Pig9r but with the cams you seem to be not getting too much more hp and torque then me and and i don't have the cams? and I'm getting 32-33 miles per gallon on the high way.
I thought that Nev clamed that if you have his cams that you will get at least 170 hp?
I was really thinking of getting the cams put if its only going to give me a few more hp for that money I don't think its worth it.
Now carpenters sound really good but not sure what I'll do with 245 hp
Pig9r so is it true with the cams make the Rocket sound cool? or you can't tell the difference?
A lot of folks claimed over 160 hp with the cams, I can't remember seeing a dyno sheet from any.
It doesn't sound any differet, just the faintest bit of lope at idle. Not a v-twin or v-8 sound, if that is what you are getting at.
As far as Carpenter, I am not saying go for the entire package, but if you are looking at drop in cams, check and see what they have available. Might be cheaper and I think they are just as proven as anyone else.
Piggy what exhaust system are you running?
Nevs drop ins are mainly for stronger mid range torque, he does do more agressive cams (I still have a set in garage) but they are not drop ins, his cams are new not regrinds so you do not have to send him your old cams to remetal (not that there is anything wrong with that but it's just easier)
I also have Carpenter cams they are good but definately not drop ins, mine need new buckets/springs/collets to fit.
