Help! Bike cranks once but won't start.

Been there, doing that...
Good Luck!!!

some diag maybe?

yeh, I agree, odds are with the ignition switch, but I'm always hesitant to throw a part at a vehicle without at least some diagnosis. It really doesn't take much to bypass it and confirm.......there are several thread that cover the procedures used by members for similar situations.

It will be a bad or loose connection somewhere.

Undo the battery (-ve first) then reconnect it ( -ve last) and make sure that the terminals and connections are clean and tight - tight is important.

If that doesn't fix it then check the fuses and relays for cleanliness and serviceability. The starter relay in under the RHS cover next to the seat. Unplug it and wipe it and its receiver clean.

Then check the tightness and cleanliness of the connections to the starter motor and the solenoid.

Those are all easy checks. If they don't fix the problem then it is probably the ignition switch. The easy (but not necessarily accurate) check is to move the handlebars and see if it works. If it does then it is the switch, but if it doesn't then it still may be the switch. It is possible to bypass the switch, but that is a bit of work with multiple wire connections. It is also possible to repair the switch with some basic tools. The hardest thing is removing the "non-removable" bolts, but even that is not too difficult. After you remove it you solder the bad connection, put it all back together with new "removable" bolts, then ride. At this time it would be worth installiong something like the EB light relay system to stop the problem happening again.

there is a post that i seen about a bad ign switch and they run a jumper wire to (I think) the starter relay i think you have to have the ign on and it bypasses the ign. shows a picture. this might be a good test if you can find the post.

Not that I'm the type to overcomplicate things, but it looks like it might have just gotten a **** battery. Had the shop do a proper load test and recharge and she fired right up when I plugged it back in. They grabbed me a new one and swapped so hopefully that's an end to it.

Good stuff .. glad it's sorted.

Hey good stuff, I wander why the booster/jumper cables did not work then!!
It did sound like the battery tho.... Well I am happy I got something right.

Glad your on the road again

I WAS ABOUT 30 MILes from home stopped to eat, left key on and when i came out dead bat. a man hooked up his car bat no luck. we let his car run for 20 minutes still no luck. he took me to walmart got a battery. put the new bat in would not start. then we let his car run for about 30 minutes and with his car hooked up it finaly started. after that it worked just fine. i guess it takes a lot to crank the rocket.

Well, consider that the starter motor would have been considered a pretty powerful bike engine when Triumph first got started...

They figured there was a short in the battery on mine which was why it wouldn't start even when boosting. Let the new battery sit on the charger over night before putting it in the bike to make sure it was properly topped up.

Now I've just got to get my Rivco risers and air horn installed and hope I don't go screwing anything up for the rest of this season. (Next summer I'm planning some new lighting, bound to mess something up there!)
