Front Tire Choices


I'm with you on getting Avon Cobra tires. I have been running them since the first tire change years ago. Just have something for you to try. My Rocket would have that slight wobble in corners until I made a change recommended by one of the early Rocket gurus. His suggestion ended the wobble and in the 18+ years I've been riding this bike, it has never come back. Here it is. Set your front and rear air pressure at 38 PSI. I do this with all my heavy bikes now days.
 
That's what I run my current tires on anyhow, 38 just seems to be right .
 
i checked my pressure and it is front 40 and rear 42
i will try 38 and 38 on my next run but i am scared so likely i will press it in the corners.

I currently have one of the Elite tires on the front of my GT, not sure if this will make sense, but compared to the stock Avon, I find that you have to push a little harder in a fast corner to get the front to do what you want, and it seems to be slower to react going into a fast corner one way and then transitioning back to the other direction, like in a S turn,. I figured maybe it just needed time to work in, but after about 1000km, this thing is horrible for this bike, I'm not saying it is a bad tire, just not the best choice for this bike. that's coming off and we will try the Road 6 backwards and see how that goes. I found that the Avon was able to get into a quick turn with less effort and do it quicker. I rode my kids SV with the Road 5's on it and it was a blast and rode great, so hopefully it works well on this bike with the Excedra Max on the back.
 
Are you considering the Road 6 reversed for your GT? On the Rocky Mountain ATV site they show the 150-70-17 as the closest fit for the 150-80-17 replacement. That's going to drop the front and you've already raised the rear with the Exedra Max (good choice!).

Wondering if that might shorten the rake too much? Inquiring minds want to know....

I have the 55 series Exedra on mine, and I pushed the forks up in the triples about 10 mm. I've had it to 115 mph with no noticeable instability.
 
I'm thinking it should make for a really good turn in, not sure how it would affect stability at high speed though

I have a friend that used them on a rocket towing a trailer they were a good tire for that. and he occasionally ran it up to 100mph.
i would not worry about hi speed but that is just me. i worry more about lost height i had a shorter tire and was dragging the floorboard all the time.
just wondering if you could use the mich and drop the fork's about 1/2 inch?
