The fork lowers on my 09 Touring are now losing their lacquer and looking a bit sorry.

I'm thinking about either polishing them or painting them myself but don't really want to take them off (happy to remove the front wheel to do the job).

Have any of you guys done this? if so what was the process?

have not done as yet but am planning on doing them, just make sure you remove All the lacquer and then use an Alloy Etch Primer, I am planing to use a Hammer finish silver or gunmetal grey as the Hammer finish paints are tough against stone chips

I painted the ones on my '08 R3T a few years ago when I did a front tire change. I masked off everything (and I mean everything) so no over spray would get on the bike or my garage floor. I used black rattle can engine paint to shoot them. Turned out nice (I thought). That was about 40,000 miles ago and they have held up okay, though I should have touched them up but haven't. Even with a couple of chips in them they are still a big improvement over the way they looked before. Go for it.
