why would anyone want a drive by wire
#1 not all but some of them hesitate when u give it gas (u push the throttle and all of a sudden its 1/2 throttle)
#2 its probably going to cost u $1000 to fix it and they do wear out.
#3 toyota had a problem with there's launching people into things and i personally was driving a dodge pick up and sitting at a stop sign went about 1/2 throttle and tried to put my ass into oncoming traffic.
#4 there is no way i would climb on to a powerful bike with drive by wire.

Most modern aircraft including multi million dollar fighter jets with insane power are fly by wire, the technology has been around since the 50's.

Why...
I've got a few reasons.
#1 multiple maps. Fire breathing dragon when you want, fuel sipping tourer when you want.
#2 traction control. Lots better handling for wet roads, wet crosswalk paint, oil, sand or just a well worn piece of asphalt.
#3 launch assist. Unless you're a pro, a chip should be able to to do a better job balancing maximum throttle with minimum tire spin.
# 4 Cruise

I'll admit my Kawasaki did have significant throttle lag; but my Yammy is very responsive in sport mode.
A cable system is not failproof either. They can get stuck open too and like a lot of Rocket owners with heated grips have found out; they can break and provide NO power. I was lucky I was on a side road when mine broke.

I'm not complaining about the current system; but there is a LOT to like about a TBW that's done correctly.

cruise control******great.
do u really want a computer to figure out how much power to put to the wheels? for example i had a guy talking to me will we were working on one of his vehicles and told me about his new land rover he said that when he was back east he got in a little snow and it would cut back on power because of tires slipping it would not move. he took it back to dealer several times and they said normal. he went down a slight hill and then he could not get back up so his brother pulled him with a little blazer.:( he sold the land rover.
i have also had vehicles in the shop with the front wheels off the ground and could not get the rpms over 1200 and did not have any power.
if i am coming out of a corner and want to get after it i do not want the computer cutting power.
i guess it just depends on what u want in a few years the car will drive u and people will be lined up to buy them old mechanics will be gone so who will work on them. i guess u just throw them away and buy a new one .

Yes please! I would like a computer to figure out how much power to put the the wheels. (within parameters based on my input)

My Yammy does that just fine. It's not new at all and it's used sucessfully by every mfg out there.
The owners manual of my FJR discussed situation like your friends land rover. Push the TCS off button on the dash and rock it out of mud, sand or ice.
My Grand Cherokee has it and it's not really the best system. It robs a lot of horse power. :( I can turn it off and accelerate a lot faster.
A Camero SS rental I drove a couple of months ago was tuned in nicely though; I don't think if I had that thing a month I could feather the throttle better.
My brother in law has a Challenger that seems to do a great job too, haven't driven it myself though.

I heard some guys on the FJR forum say they can ride harder out of a curve with it off but I know MotoGP bikes use a throttle control and they do a pretty good job of coming out of the corners.
Even if you wanted it off on dry pavement it's a **** nice thing in the rain.

There is an intersection that I come through on my way home from work that is slick as hell. Any kind of hurry on the Rocket and feel the rear end slip around. On the FJR I can see the little light come on the dash and feel just a little movement in the rear. Same thing on those brick/stone/paver types of entries at shopping centers.

So I guess I would like a TBW like the Camero SS or my FJR and would prefer not to have it on the Rocket if it were like my old Kawasaki or Grand Cherokee.

Self driving cars??

End of drunk driving.
Send your car for tire changes, inspections, or to pick up the kids while you're doing something else.
No more parking fees at the airport.
Fewer road ragers.

Technology can be a pain in the arse but there's usually more silver lining than not.

"I for one welcome our robot overlords."

i just love the different opinions u get here on the rocket site:thumbsup::)
i am close to hanging up my wrench so if i did not have to work on them i would have a different opinion.
now when a car comes in customer telling me it is sluggish i not only have to contend with wires, coils, bad gas, plugged filters, plugged exhaust.traction control, timing problems and now the computer deciding to put out low horse power.
i used to be able to drive a car three blocks and most of the time tell u the problem. now some times i have to check them for two days before i can tell them we might be able to do this and this may not work but is what i would do if it was my car.

Glad there's enough of us with a high opinion of the Rocket to keep em around.
I've never been a real mechanic; but been poor enough most of my life to do most of my own maintenance.
Real lucky these days to have forums like this one with so many people with REAL skills.

I do remember having a '79 Ford Fairmount straight six that I could stand on the ground between the firewall and engine to change the starter or master cylinder.
Getting a rack & pinion front end from the wrecking yard and changing it out in an afternoon was nice too.
Brakes were shyte though, ended up T-boning an 'old man' that pulled out in front of me. Come to think about it; he was probably only a few years older than I am now.

Are you currently riding an FJR? I've got a Super Tenere and I believe they share the same type of internals and computer equipment, even the same dash.. This is my first bike with the full electronics suite. The first time I ever rode a bike with Fly by wire throttle was a Triumph Tiger Explorer. Its throttle was very light to the touch, and extremely responsive. It practically changed my life. Such a smooth throttle feel, with incredibly smooth and well though out fueling.

I do agree with your points, especially the point about multiple fuel maps. As I am sure you have as well, the T and S mode on the Yamahas' are fantastic, just a single button press (instead of going through menus' and 5 different modes who the hell knows what the differences are) the T mode is soft, smooth and very forgiving on the throttle especially in inclement weather and high traffic areas, parking lots... But when you set it to "S" mode the bike becomes an entirely different beast, the front end lifts up with the tiniest amount of gas so better watch out!

This is the type of things I've always wanted in the rocket after owning one for a few years... The roads in my town are in very bad condition with Sand, dirt, oil.. having traction control would of made me feel a lot more comfortable, the Rocket 3's second gear was extremely snatchy for me and always irked me when I was trying to go around a 90 degree turn with as little throttle as possible. Having a "T" mode would of been wonderful for commuting.

Please dont get me wrong, I absolutely loved my rocket and babied the thing and took great care of it... But it really is time for all manufacturers to get on board and get these amazing new features on all the bikes, cruise control and traction control are just amazing. For me personally I got the ES version of the Yamaha which gave me electronic suspension adjustment.. Are you riding alone, or 2 up? With or with out bags? Press one button and it adjusts the front and bake springs to the perfect settings. Just wonderful!!
