First Bad News for new Rocket: oil leaks

I know for a fact that my dealer didn't check bolt torque.

My bet is that the dealer doesn't even have a torque wrench to check it! I wouldn't let a dealer air up my tires, much less work on my bike. The last they ever see of it is after I ride it away.

That is not true. Look up the Magnuson-moss warranty act. They cannot attach a cost or service to your warranty. It is illegal for them to even say that you have to bring it in. A scammer Harley dealer tried that one on me once.

My local Triumph dealer is charging $995 for just the "set up". Pirate !

Same for my new BMW R1250R.

Why is this needed??? Isn't the quality control at the factory adequate?

When I purchased my Rocket in Ontario several years ago, the service fee was around $800 Canadian while the same fee in Quebec was half that. While I agree the dealer has to perform some work to prep the bike, I wonder how many really check the torque on every fastener outside????

Has anyone been able to order the bike in the crate sent to their home? I know one dealer was willing to ship me a crated bike when I was on the hunt for my Rocket but the shipping costs kind of offset the dealer prep and drive down to pick it up.

Still think this is a big cash grab!!!

A salesman told me about the torques. He wasn’t specific. There’s an interesting video on here of two mechanics prepping a new Rocket from the crate. It’s in very fast motion. Not a trivial task.

Agreed, same here, I did first year, bolts not tightened, or even left off, every time. Overtorqued one of the pinch bolts on the front axle, I got it halfway out before it snapped, drilling a stainless bolt out of aluminum=no fun.

I didn't bring in my Roadster for it's 1000 km service. Spoke with the dealer stating it was impractical to have them service it (I live 900 kms away) and that I was a licensed tradesman. All they told me to do was replace the oil with the specified type and weight using a genuine Triumph filter. They also told me to ensure I had the receipts. They confirmed that the bike would still be warranted. With that confirmation, I did everything they would have done from an inspection/adjustment standpoint.

So, based on my experience, you should be able to perform your first service without being concerned about warranty (and save a few bucks on shop labour).

It is 100% TRUE. In the USA the warranty can NOT be voided because you did your own break-in 500-600 mile oil change and inspection. You only have to document doing it yourself. Any dealer who states that your warranty is voided if you don't bring it in is committing a crime.
