I just passed 600 miles on my 2008 R3T. So I changed the oil, filter, and even the drain plug washers and o-ring, just like the manual said. The only suprprise was that the oil (Mobil 1 Racing 4T 15W-50) cost me 55 USD per 4-liter jug, of which I had to buy two!
My question is about the final drive oil. My gut tells me I ought to change it too, but the manual doesn't say to do that until much further down the road (at 20K, IIRC). What do you folks think? How often do you change yours? If I were to change it now, do you have any tips for me?
Regarding procedure, I imagine you simply remove both the drain plug and the filler plug, let the old oil drain, replace the drain plug and refill with the OEM spec oil or some equivalent, and replace the filler plug. Is there more to it than that? Are there washers and such that need to be replaced?
