Final Drive Assembly Replaced Running too hot?

I just had the rear end replaced on my bike for loud grinding noise. I went for a beautiful 50 mile ride tonight with the mate. I was hearing a slight humming coming from the rear end. When I got home, I put my hand on the rear end. It was too hot to keep my hand on it more than a few seconds.

Does that sound right?

No, it doesn't sound right for me. :?

Mine doesn't run hot like this so it might be a problem.

Never put my hand on mine , but that does sound too hot , any doubts get it checked :?
Have you checked the oil level , some thing simple like that , just in case

They do get hot but its better to be safe than sorry.

Yeah, check oil.. a 100 mile run with 150+ RWHP, I can touch rear drive, but can't touch the Jars....

oil level is good.

I spoke to the Triumph dealer taday...he said he didn't know how hot the rear end should get????

He said ride it... it's still under warranty.

My differential gets pretty hot also, no problems. Put about 4 or 5 hundred miles on it and change the differential oil to synthetic. Had the same worry with my VTX when it was new, took it in and they also said just ride it. Put over 18K miles on that bike with no problems. I change my differential oil every 8K miles and use Amsoil, I think its 70-90 weight oil?

I measured the temp with a Sentry Optronic thermal measuring device.All temps are measure on the surface and in Fahrenheit. The temps after 1/2 hour of riding:

Engine head 235

Bevel Gear assm 145

rear tire 118
Drive shaft enclosure 141
oil tank 179
rear fender 104

Remember, you're dissipating 2 or 3 % of your shaft horsepower into the bevel drive.

depending how you ride, that could be 2 or 3 HP, 1500 to 2250W

You want to put your hand on a 2KW electric bar heater?

But according to your measured temps, you can't even fry chips in the diff oil, so I reckon it's OK...

I know....it's the old not sure if...but - hope it's fixed syndrome. I have done all my own repairs on my bikes untill this one...warranty time. FYI - My Beemer diff didn't get so hot.

I'll keep on riding and see. By the way, I rode it very gingerly today. I didn't kill it on that ride. There is still a noise coming from the rear end (not like the grinding I had before it was replace) ...but I'm going to give it a month or so.
