Dobeck EI

Agree with the comments of having a Dyno done. Simply that is the best practice for what we all are trying to do here. Optimize the fuel/air mixture.

In stating that that, the Dobeck adds fuel. It doesn't lean the fuel out. So if I'm using Tuneboy and running a modified tune created from another dyno'ed bike - using the Dobeck to intercept the injector's signals and modify them is allowing me to "fatten" the air/fuel mixture rather than reduce it. This is the premise behind the Dobeck as I have studied and understand it.

1. Aftermarket performance Intake/exhaust modifications lean out the stock tunes.

2. The Dobeck enriches the air/fuel ratio with more fuel.

I don't see how I'm going to be running lean following this logic. Even if I elect to start over with one of the stock OEM Triumph tunes that came originally with my bike.

Will,

You're right that adding fuel to a tune already developed for the same configuration as your bike should not result in a lean condition.

But, if you were to start with one of the stock OEM Triumph tunes I don't know how you would know how much fuel to add to come up with the correct air/fuel ratio. Without a real time reading you would again be shooting in the dark.

If you already have Tuneboy, why not just get a dyno run done and if necessary adjust the tune. You can use trim tables to add fuel if necessary and perform another dyno pull to check your results. It should only take two or three pulls to find the sweet spot.

Agree. That's one way of doing it. However....

There's no one (Dyno tuners) around here on the Mid-Atlantic east coast that can tune and adjust my trim table in Tuneboy, with any accuracy, after a run with a dyno pull. It would take several runs probably to get it right. it involves a degree of repetitive guess work at the various TP and RPM axis's until the A/F mixture is correct (desired).

The same could be said for the Dobek, although the adjustment is much simpler and it can be done in real time while on the Dyno. That is what I'm going to pursue once I receive and install it. Once I tune it initially, me and the Rocket are heading over to Eastern Performance and it will be dyno'ed and adjusted in real time.

Those results I will post when it's been completed. If I'm not satisfied/comfortable with the results, I'll pursue a trip down to Powertrip this spring, right after the RAA event in Maggie Valley.

Sounds like you're taking all the necessary precautions. It will be interesting to hear about the results. Have fun and best of luck.

Skip, what OEM Triumph tune are you running, while using the Dobeck?

TORS tune.
No catbpox.
GiPro, no secondaries, all 5 K&N's.
I just adjust it when I change exhausts back-n-forth,
like I'm doing now....
I've been running the Triumph TORS tune even with that single 3 into 1 harley slip-on,
That's the last time I played with the Dobeck.
Now I'm changing back to my TORS,
so I'll do it again in about an hour.
I think you'll like your Dobeck when it comes in.
like you said, "peace of mind knowing you're not lean".

Ride safe,
skip

leanengine

I am certainly not an informed mechanic, but I do know that running an engine too lean will cause piston crown pitting and eventual failure.
Burned valves too.
As for symptoms, engine will run rough and backfire.

Will,
In my original post that you quoted I said
Hook it up to the battery,
that's not right, there is NO hook up for the battery,
DUH
it intercepts the electric signal already powering the throttlebodies, so that's wrong.
You still need to ground it tho.
I got so much crap going to the Eastern Beaver PC8, I just typed before thinking.
Sorry, just didn't want you thinking yours was missing something
when you get it and there's no power connector.
sorry.
BTW, just modified original post to eliminate that bit of confusion.
Didn't even realize it was there till I was reading your quote.

No worries Skip. I know it has no positive; it only a ground.
