Discontinuing models - What's going on?

They build a helluva machine but miss the mark, 2 gallon tank on a 160hp machine will not take you very far, that is the only reason i didnt buy one, im sure a lot of potential customers had the same tought
160 HP Vmax would be a very sick machine, they're more like 197 hp, and having a short range isn't a reason to discontinue a model...the Vmax wasn't really intended for long rides anyway

You are right, i didnt have the correct numbers so i just guessed at it, i still think i will end up with one some day:)

My guess is that ONLY a few TOP DEALER PRINCIPALS really know - and most of them know the value of secrecy (to stay as top dealer principals). But it would require a serious rework of the R3 ECU/O2-sensors etc to pass Euro4. And frankly after 10+ years I doubt the sales are there to justify the mod's. There are enough dealers saying they have the last ones to indicate that SOMETHING is up.

A NEW ROCKET - maybe down the road - but if you were Triumph would you TELL FOLK NOW? - Nobody would buy the OLD stock. You'll know if all of a sudden all R3's for sale (in the EU) are suddenly registered and sold as 0-mile dealer bikes. But read on an Aussie site that the Hayabusa is going - One of the KTM's too. Ducati have already made a smaller Paningale because the original wont pass Euro4. Honda announced one of the FAST 600's will no longer be sold in the EU.

Other bikes have disappeared from lines ups already this year. Most a bit long in the tooth and unable to pass Euro4.
I definitely like the idea of a new version of the rocket and plan to wait a while and see what they come up with--but frankly am scratching my head after reading another post saying all bikes will have governors by jan/17....so, the question is what will it look like? bigger engine?--more advanced?? but restricted by a governor and cant go over 75mph? doesn't make sense--so who knows..

The whole governor thing has been pretty much debunked. I think its safe to say that nothing like that is going to happen any time soon.

Revised Framework Directive for Motorcycles

The LAW as it affects the UK and a lot of the EU. Spain has always been more papist than the pope (since before the Armada) - so .................................

Also note things like anti-tamper - So TuneECU/TuneBoy wont work. Already the case on some newer Triumphs.
So yes a NEW R3 could appear - but basically you'll be running it stock. And if it appears for 2020 - has to be Euro5 compliant.

Can Euro4 - Euro5 in 3 years - be done - Yup - BMW already have. Will Triumph do it - Ask Mr Bloor. I doubt it.

My R3 (returned almost to standard save air filter) basically failed the last Euro3 emission test 2 years ago - but the dealer who took it basically lied and said they'd left it in "service bypass" mode and would return it to "road" mode as soon as it was in their workshop again - so it was given a pass. These modes - as we know - don't actually exist.

It was really the PCV/AT that screwed it up. This year it's due again - I'll be deactivating/removing the PCV.

Just read this

YAMAHA will discontinue the XT660Z Tenere and XJR1300 at the end of the year.

Yamaha is currently evaluating all its non-Euro4 complaint bikes. In deciding whether to make an engine meet Euro4 emissions and noise standard, the main considerations are whether it can be done, how much it will add to the cost of the bike and whether it will suffer in terms of performance.

Anti-Tamper is already a non issue for many models, the work arounds just take time. Given Wayne's deeper knowledge of ECU code than TineECU I'd look towards Tuneboy for a fix first if the new bikes are Anti-Tamper enabled.

As far as emissions go, it's not that hard to pass with a cat in each muffler, a cat in the cross box, and a small cam revision, plus adding in a PAIR valve. All things Triumph has the ability to add with minimal R&D on the R3. The real challenge will probably be the new noise abatement requirement in Euro4 and Euro5. They are pretty strict and may require internal engine changes to comply.

FWIW, NOTHING is tamper proof...someone will find a way around it...
Well so far - AFAIK - nobody has.

IIRC one Triumph now has a dual ECU - One to map and one to detect tampering. Messing with one screws the other such that it has to go to Hinckley - not a dealer.
I HOPE somebody bypasses it - but I remain frankly sceptical. It's liability issue. Will probably be easier just to fit a complete new ECU.

And it won't be long before enterprising souls appear with such an option, and with complete plug and play capability!
