Battery Opinion

I am coming up on three years of ownership of my R/3. I am still on the original battery, but it has been hooked to a Battery Tender when not in use since new. The battery still tests well within limits and the old girl fires up every morning. I have always believed in good preventive maintenance and with the ES trip coming up was thinking it may be time for new one. I would hate to be in bowels of Tennessee at five in the morning when the box decided to die of old age. Anybody gone longer than three or four years when using the Battery Tender?

I have the original battery in the Classic. It's just fine. ( think it is, that is)....

Remember, the intended purpose and primary use of the battery is starting the engine, not running the engine or electronics systems. That's the job of the alternator.

I have not replaced a battery in over 10 years using tenders-and we have 9 of the going! That said, I'd be putting in a new one as it's almost impossible to bump start an FI bike-if not totally impossible.

I have seen a Rocket bump started. The battery did have enough juice to light the instruments but wouldn't crank the starter.

Shoulda been more clear. Never seen an FI bike that was totally dead bump start. No pressure to the fuel rails.

There is dead and there is dead. If a battery is discharged, it's at or below 9 volts. I don't know what the threshold voltage for the electronic systems on the R3 is, but on a Caterpillar engine, anything less than 9 volts and the computer goes to sleep.

I just replaced the battery in the Bonnie with an AGM but the battery in the R3 will be a Hawker as well as the KLR. No, not hocker, Hawker.

Too bad Johnson Controls don't make small Optima's.
