back fire issues

I think i'm in the right place?
The after market exhaust system on my bike is OK looking the previous owner has put baffles in but they don't seem to do much. as far as i can see they are just perforated tubes about 6 inches long and the bike pops and crackles on deceleration and over run. I have been thinking maybe the bike needs more baffling? I notice there are quite a few complaints on google about the popping issue but wondered if anyone here could point me in the right direction with regard to this problem. i dont mind a bit of pop and crackle but this is quite loud and is more a back fire to be honest.

Occasional little pop and crackle, or snarl maybe is ok, but if you have actual backfiring don't drive it anymore until you get it properly tuned or inspected. Backfiring can cause permanent damage to your motor.
It could either be the tuning is off or wrong with either the AFR and/or timing, or you could possibly find a leak in the intake somewhere like your vacuum lines?

At any rate, I wouldn't run the motor like that.
 
Does she carry on all the time or is there a particular rev range where the problem occurs?
 

If it has an aftermarket exhaust and the original tune, it is likely running very lean, causing the popping. It should be able to be solved by putting in a tune that gives it some more fuel. Mine pops a little, which is normal, but as mentioned above you don't want it too lean. You would be wise to get tune ecu and find out what maps its running.
 
Thank you all very much. i am concerned as it is quite a loud pop and crackle. i have ordered a software package and leads for my lap top. i had a similar set up when i owned a nissan 300zx TT so hope i can resolve the issue. i have no idea what maps its running presently and yes it is more or less constant although if i hold a bit of gas on when decelerating it dont occur ??

i plugged the lap top to the bike. i haven't made any changes but the map it came up with is: 20054 (20050). i also did a diagnostic check and there are no errors. i have downloaded some maps for running an after market exhaust without cat. i aint got the bottle to download one yet tho. not until i have had a good root through the whys and why nots of doing such a thing. any suggestions will be received with gratitude.
 


The 20050 tune is for aftermarket exhaust w/o cat - I have that tune in my 05 with TORS pipes & it decreased the amount of decel pop by quite a bit due to it is not as lean as the stock tune so you should not be having this problem. Now if, you are running a more open, aftermarket intake setup then you are going to still be too lean & need another tune.

Check your exhaust manifold nuts. Make certain they are still torqued. If they come loose that will cause back firing/popping as its sucking air. Easy tattle tale is exhaust soot in the immediate area of the manifold
 
It's good to be cautious. Everybody means well sharing tunes, but there are risks, and notice too that some tunes are not just year specific but VIN# specific within the same year! The "Warning" that pops up in TuneECU before you download gets your attention! ToxIc2300 had a good idea but don't over torque those manifold nuts. If there's a leak there it may be better to get new gaskets? Also check all your vacuum lines under your tank for one that came off or for dry rot cracking. Any leak there could create the same problem.
 
What kind of upgrades do you have on the bike. Your bike is an 2004. First I would look at the vacuum lines and then the coil leads. If the vacuum lines on a 2004 if have not ever been changed you will need to change them. The coil leads could have come loose so you will need to tighten them. Give @HansO a PM with all your upgrades and email address and he will send you a better tune. Do the vacuum lines and the coils first before messing with the tune.
