Avon Tires- Have You Heard This?

OK - here is a bit of info.

When I first came to Spain - EVERY bike dealer, mechanic and tyre guy rated Avons VERY HIGHLY across the board. When I bought the R3 this was still the case. Cobra easy to source.

AND THEN - all of a sudden everybody went off them. It was a bugger to find them for my Guzzi - which has always loved Avons. My tyre place told me that they were having issues with availability and had heard of issues from their wholesale supplier. This coincided with the Avon US "mileage guaranty" offer. He freely admits that having switched to Bridgestone there is no incentive for him to stock Avons at all now.

My guess is that they did have a bad batch of tyres - either poor rubber or a vulcanisation failure. This hit the supply chain and we have long (and failing) memories.

Just so you won’t think I’m unjustly slamming the Honda Service Mgr. I called the Triumph dealer closest to me, and spoke to the parts dept. I asked if they could locate an Avon Cobra 140/75 r 17 for me as I would like to purchase one. The parts person said (and I quote) “Avon doesn’t make that tire yet, but they might be available after September 19th.”

I am now convinced I’m in the Twilight Zone.

Yep...got that...ehitter!!...whats an ehitter??
ummm??
Got an Avon on da front now meself too!

Re the triumph guy not knowing about the Avon, all he had to do was get on the distributors web site and look it up!...must have been on his smoko break or sumthin???

Cobra story. About 2 weeks after mounting my new Avon Cobra's, I walked out to go for a ride, and from a distance, I saw something on my rear tire, dead center. As I got closer, I saw it was a great big screw. Had been there long enough for it's head to be worn off. Of course I cursed, threw a little fit, then got some pliers to pull it out. I know I'll have to take a picture, but this thing was 1/4" in diameter, and at least 2" was in the tire. I have Ride-On installed, and was puzzled as to why I saw no sign of the sealant trying to escape the screw/bolt. The end of this thing is pointed, like a huge dry wall screw. It went in, apparently hit the steel cord, then turned, and continued into the tire at an angle, never penetrating completely through. Never leaked a drop, still running fine. That's one tough steel cord!

That is funny .... I have one on my bike now for about 2 years or so, and I recently purchased a replacement for when the current tire wears out.

Get it from Rocky Mountain ATV. 140/75R-17 67V V Rated
